Curtin Malaysia’s CPD Webinar draws over 1,000 participants, showcasing cutting-edge digital technologies in construction

Miri, Sarawak – 13 August 2024 – Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) recently hosted a highly successful Continuing Professional Development (CPD) webinar, attracting over 1,000 participants from various sectors of the construction industry and academia.

This event, titled ‘Digitalisation and Smart Era: Surveying Disciplines’, was a collaborative effort by the Department of Built Environment at Curtin Malaysia’s Faculty of Humanities and Health Sciences, in partnership with IJM IBS Sendirian Berhad, Building Cost Information Services Malaysia (BCISM), and Curtin University in Australia.

Highlighting its significance and industry relevance, the webinar received three CPD accreditations from the Board of Quantity Surveyors Malaysia (BQSM).

The event featured four distinguished speakers who offered valuable insights into the latest digital technologies and practices revolutionising the construction sector. Liew Zheng Jia from IJM IBS Sdn. Bhd. discussed ‘Build Better with SMART IBS’. Ahmad Akem Mohamad Said from Building Cost Information Services Malaysia (BCISM), explored ‘Leveraging BIM with Cost Data’. Sr. Dr. Muhammad Imran Zin Zawawi from the Malaysian Public Works Department (JKR) delved into ‘From Paperwork to Progress: The Rise of Government E-Procurement’, and Dr. Jeremy Wu from Curtin University presented on ‘Bridging the Gap in Industry and Academia Partnerships to Improve Curriculum Industry-Readiness’.

Dr. Low Wai Wah, Head of Built Environment & Learning and Teaching Chair of the Faculty of Humanities and Health Sciences, emphasised the event’s importance, stating, “This webinar is crucial as it provides stakeholders with the opportunity to learn about the latest technologies and how they can enhance work efficiency. Emerging digital technologies are evolving traditional roles to more advanced levels, rather than rendering them obsolete.”

Professor Roy Rillera Marzo, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Health Sciences , celebrated the webinar’s success and its role in Curtin Malaysia’s 25th anniversary celebrations. “The virtual platform allows industry professionals, students, and academicians to explore innovative strategies, emerging trends, and practical applications that are shaping the future of the construction sector,” he remarked.

He added that the event underscores the university’s commitment to advancing education and industry practices through state-of-the-art digital technologies.
