Curtin Malaysia’s Department of Civil & Construction Engineering holds virtual gathering for alumni
Posted date:Miri – 28 February 2022 – The Department of Civil & Construction Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Science at Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) recently organised a virtual gathering for its alumni. The ‘Alumni Gathering 2022’ was open to all civil and construction engineering and environmental engineering alumni and many from various graduating years joined from Malaysia, Singapore and elsewhere.
“The gathering was a good way to connect with our alumni who are working in various industries and countries and learn about the changing trends in industry, including career opportunities for new graduates,” said the Faculty’s Associate Dean of Learning and Teaching, Associate Professor Tang Fu Ee.
During the gathering, civil and construction engineering alumnus Kon Hong Jun shared his professional achievements and plan to apply for Professional Engineer status in Singapore. Associate Professor Tang said it was good to have alumni like Kon who have considerable work experience or experience working overseas sharing their experiences as they can inspire new graduates and also highlight career opportunities in their respective industries.
Associate Professor Tang also highlighted the fact that the all courses at Curtin Malaysia are identical to those offered by Curtin in Australia, are approved by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and accredited or recognised by relevant professional bodies, and meet global standards. Furthermore, they are practical courses designed with input from industry to meet their needs. These are significant advantages for Curtin graduates and indeed, Curtin Malaysia graduates are highly sought after by industry due to this, he said.
Associate Professor Wong Kwong Soon, Head of the Civil and Construction Engineering Department, meanwhile updated the alumni on the latest developments at Curtin Malaysia, particularly its current campus expansion programme.
“All the new buildings on campus provide new equipment and technologies to support learning and research. It is the university’s aim to provide not only world-class facilities for our students but also an enhanced student experience,” he said.
Associate Professor Wong said that, in addition to the engineering and science laboratories at Curtin Malaysia which include a newly-completed engineering research laboratory building, there is the Sarawak Biovalley Pilot Plant (SBPP) for biotechnological research and soon there will be a facility for aquaculture research as well.
“Use of these facilities are not limited to staff and students only but are also available to interested industry players to conduct joint research and lab testing of prototypes and products,” Associate Professor Wong added.
Kon and another alumnus, Cynthia Tan, who is also currently working in Singapore, shared their experiences dealing with COVID-19 that country, where residents and businesses alike face severe penalties for breaches of standard operating procedures (SOPs). Environmental engineering alumni Choong Wei Sheng also shared his desire to pursue postgraduate studies and apply for a PhD research scholarship.
