Curtin Malaysia’s Department of General Studies distributes Bubur Lambuk in conjunction with Ramadhan

Miri – 8 April 2024 – In a heart-warming display of solidarity and cultural appreciation during the holy month of Ramadan, the Department of General Studies of the Faculty of Humanities and Health Sciences of Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) recently conducted a Bubur Lambuk Distribution Programme at the Permyjaya Children’s Activity Center (PAKK).

The two-day event, held on 29 and 30 March, was organised in collaboration with Permyjaya PAKK, the Child Protection Team, Child Welfare Team, and the Children’s Representative Council (MPKK).

Led by Jaynie Eudora Savarimuth, a second-year psychological science student, 46 student volunteers and a number of lecturers prepared and distributed over 600 bowls of Bubur Lambuk to the public, including both fasting Muslims and other members of the public.

Bubur Lambuk is a porridge that is typically made with meat, onions, garlic, shrimps, coconut oil, pandan leaves, and spices. Traditionally, it is given to people free of charge at mosques during Ramadan.

Reflecting on the significance of the programme, Valerie Velina Nagreg, Head of the Department of General Studies and the Faculty of Humanities and Health Sciences’ Chair of External Engagement, who was among the volunteers, remarked, “By celebrating cultural diversity and embracing the values of empathy and altruism, the Bubur Lambuk Distribution Programme was a shining example of the power of collective goodwill in building harmonious societies.”

Miri District Child Protection Team chairman Mohd. Firdaus Khaidir Razali, meanwhile, commented on the significance of students of different backgrounds cooking Bubur Lambuk as both a cultural experience and a way of contributing to the community.

He said that in addition to the distribution of Bubur Lambuk to the public, the students also took part in the breaking of fast or Iftar on both days, further strengthening bonds with the community.

Jaynie said the two-day event left an indelible mark on the students’ hearts. “The programme was a meaningful celebration of tradition and also exemplified our university’s commitment to fostering social cohesion and promoting community well-being.
