Curtin Malaysia’s Entrepreneurial Bazaar ignites campus with innovation and creativity

Miri, Sarawak – 8 October 2024 – Curtin University Malaysia’s campus buzzed with entrepreneurial spirit as over 200 of its students came together for the highly anticipated Entrepreneurial Bazaar, an annual student-led event that not only showcased students’ business acumen but also highlighted Curtin’s commitment to fostering innovation and practical skills.

Featuring more than 30 diverse booths, students displayed an impressive array of over 100 products ranging from food and beverages to 3D-printed items, accessories, and stationery. The bazaar was more than a shopping experience for the campus community and public; it was an immersion into real-world entrepreneurship, where creativity met commerce, and participating students took the reins of their own start-ups.

The festive atmosphere was heightened by live performances from the Curtin Music Club and the Curtin Arts and Dance Club, transforming the bazaar into an energetic and community-driven celebration. The combination of unique stalls and lively performances drew large crowds, turning the event into a hub of activity and collaboration.

Project Manager Lee Chao Cherng, a student from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, reflected on the success of the bazaar. “The event exceeded all expectations. It was incredible to see students from different faculties come together, not just to sell products, but to showcase their entrepreneurial spirit. The energy was contagious, and the support from the entire Curtin Malaysia community was overwhelming,” he said.

According to Unit Coordinator Farahezza Hairon Nizar, the Entrepreneurial Bazaar was more than a commercial marketplace; it was a platform for students to experience the real-world demands of running a business. She emphasised the educational value of the event, stating, “This was about more than just selling, it was about the full entrepreneurial journey. Our students learned how to manage finances, handle pricing strategies, forecast profits, and develop branding. They gained hands-on experience in areas like budgeting, supplier coordination, and customer engagement.”

She added that the students were able to put their digital marketing skills to the test, leveraging social media to drive awareness while honing their face-to-face sales techniques. The practical experience of managing cash flow, tracking expenses, and interacting directly with customers gave them invaluable insights into the challenges and rewards of entrepreneurship.

The event underscored Curtin Malaysia’s commitment to preparing its students for the challenges of the global economy by promoting entrepreneurial thinking and innovation. The cross-faculty collaboration also highlighted how students from various disciplines can come together to create something impactful.
