Curtin Malaysia’s GECOST 2024 focuses on current and future applications of green energy, computing and sustainable technology

Miri – 20 January 2024 – The third International Conference on Green Energy, Computing and Sustainable Technology (GECOST 2024), with a focus on current and future applications of green energy and sustainable technology, was successfully organised by Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) and attracted over 200 participants from 30 countries.

The participants hailed from various countries, including Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, India, China, Japan, Australia, Canada, and the United States.

Supported by the Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Sarawak (MEESty), Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), IEEE Power and Energy Society Malaysia Chapter, and Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM), the three-day conference was conducted in hybrid mode from 17 to 19 January.

The event was held as part of Curtin Malaysia’s 25th anniversary event calendar this year, and also saw the launch of its new Bachelor of Engineering in Energy Engineering and Bachelor of Engineering in Mechatronic Engineering programmes. It also included an Industrial Lecture Series focusing on energy transition and industrial automation, featuring academics and experts from different industries.

The event aimed to serve as a dynamic forum for engineers, researchers, and specialists, providing an opportunity to discuss and present the latest developments and applications related to the challenges of green energy, computing and sustainable technology for humanity in the 21st Century, with a focus on ensuring sustainability and protection of the environment.

The honorary chair of the conference and dean of Curtin Malaysia’s Faculty of Engineering and Science, Professor Tuong-Thuy Vu, expressed his delight in the encouraging response from the participants as well as the quality of paper submissions.

Professor Garenth Lim, general chair of the conference, believes that through the annual GECOST, researchers, academics, and industry practitioners will continue to contribute to the advancement of green energy, computing and sustainable technology for years to come. He also extended his gratitude to all those who supported and contributed to the success of the conference.

Meanwhile, Professor Ir. Stephanie Chan, the organising co-chair, remarked that she was thrilled with the launch of the new Energy Engineering programme at Curtin Malaysia. She said it was a testimony of the university’s commitment to shaping the future of sustainable and innovative energy solutions.

Fellow organising co-chair Associate Professor Mohan Reddy emphasised that the new Mechatronic Engineering programme highlights many recent developments in the area of mechanical, electronics, computer system, and control engineering, with project-based units that allow students to apply the knowledge they acquire to real-world project work.
