Curtin Malaysia’s new diplomas open for enrolments

Miri – 28 September 2022 – Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) has opened enrolments for its new 2-year Diplomas of Information Technology, Commerce and Media Studies. Classes for the first cohorts are set to commence at its School of Pre-U and Continuing Education (SPACE) on 24 October 2022.

The Diploma of Information Technology prepares students for a variety of roles and industries, providing them with the computing knowledge and the skills to carry out the planning, implementation, configuration and maintenance of an organisation’s computing infrastructure.

The Diploma of Commerce is designed to provide students with broad business knowledge, covering aspects such as economics, accounting and finance, marketing, management and technology.

Meanwhile, the Diploma of Media Studies trains students for media and communication roles, introducing them to various aspects of web media, journalism and screen communication.

All three diplomas have common first-year units that include four English language units and academic diligence enabling units to help students develop effective communication, critical thinking, cross-cultural awareness, lifelong learning and decision-making skills

They will also study foundational units relevant to their fields of study to give them a firm foundation for more advanced study in the second year. For the Diploma of Information Technology, these units will be in information technology, programming and engineering mathematics; and for the Diploma of Commerce, they will be in accounting, economics, management, marketing, technology and statistics. Students in the Diploma of Media Studies will study units in media and communication, journalism, visual culture and screen production.

When they enter Year 2 of their courses, they will expand their theoretical knowledge and acquire critical practical experience in their chosen fields. This will include compulsory industrial training towards the end of their second year of study to ensure they are job-ready when they graduate.

In Year 2 of the Diploma of Information Technology, students will hone their programming skills and get further grounding in computing. Topics covered will include C++, Java, Linux and object-oriented programming.

Students in the Diploma of Commerce will explore value creation in business, learn to use financial information to make informed and responsible decisions, and develop business intelligence and analytical capabilities to interpret data in a meaningful way.

Those in the Diploma of Media Studies, meanwhile, will expand their knowledge and skills in web and screen communication, media and journalism.

Graduates of three diplomas can look forward to exciting careers in their respective fields. Graduates of the Diploma of Information Technology can look forward to being IT analysts, IT support technicians or specialists, IT administrators, network and system administrators, programmers, system designers, telecommunications managers, and more.

A wide variety of roles in different industries also await graduates of the Diploma of Commerce, including accountants, administrators, advertising officers, business analysts, business managers, compliance officers, marketing specialists, human resource officers, media planners, and recruitment consultants.

Career choices for graduates of the Diploma of Media Studies include artist, curator, editor, filmmaker, journalist, marketing manager, web developer, publisher and photographer.

All three diplomas are effective pathways to related undergraduate study at Curtin Malaysia. Graduates of the Diploma of Information Technology can progress to the Bachelor of Computing, which has streams in software engineering and cyber security, and the Bachelor of Technology in Computer Systems and Networking.

Similarly, graduates of the Diploma of Commerce and Diploma of Media Studies can join the Bachelor of Commerce or Bachelor of Business Administration, and Bachelor of Communication, respectively.

According to Dr. Fidella Tiew, Director of SPACE, the current introductory fees for the diplomas are very affordable and Sarawak Foundation’s BP40 Bursary Scheme as well as PTPTN loans are applicable to the diploma programmes.

She added that students will receive strong learning support from the school to high achievement in their studies and attainment of their course learning outcomes. For those intending to pursue Curtin degrees after their diplomas, additional tuition and consultation hours will be given and students can join a mentor-mentee programme to ensure smooth flow-through to degree study.
