Curtin Malaysia’s SPACE partners with Champion Center PLT to enrich lives at Miri Methodist Children’s Home

Miri, Sarawak – 17 May 2024 – Staff and students of the Department of Arts and Commerce of the School of Pre-U and Continuing Education (SPACE) at Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) recently collaborated with Champion Center PLT, a local proprietor of badminton courts and pro shop, to visit and engage with the children at the Miri Methodist Children’s Home.

The visit was a memorable experience for the over 20 Curtin Malaysia staff and students, representatives from Champion Center PLT, and the children of the orphanage alike, with meaningful interactions through various activities, including a friendly game of badminton.

In a heart-warming display of generosity, Champion Center PLT donated movable badminton posts, racquets and shuttlecocks to the children, providing them with opportunities for regular recreational activities and physical exercise.

Reflecting on the visit, Michelle Phua, Head of the Department of Arts and Commerce, remarked, “We had a truly enriching and rewarding time at the Miri Methodist Children’s Home. Witnessing the smiles on the children’s faces and listening to them talk about their dreams for the future reaffirmed the importance of community engagement and compassion for the less fortunate.”

Phua added that the visit exemplified the Department of Arts and Commerce and Champion Center PLT’s shared commitment to holistic education, social responsibility, and making a positive impact on the lives of others.

“Curtin’s three-pronged global strategy prioritises People, Planet and Partnerships, and this initiative with Champion Center PLT and the Miri Methodist Children’s Home aligns with the People and Partnerships components, where we continue to work with our partners and community stakeholders to engage with, and change lives in, the community,” she stated.

The Miri Methodist Children’s Home has been a beacon of hope and care for orphaned children in Miri and surrounding areas since 2004. It provides a nurturing environment where children receive shelter, necessities, love, education, and thriving opportunities.
