Curtin Malaysia’s transformative workshop on managing perspectives empowers teens and educators

Miri, Sarawak – 28 August 2024 – Pustaka Negeri Sarawak, Miri buzzed with energy and anticipation recently as teenagers and educators gathered for an insightful session on how a shift in perspective can transform challenges into opportunities. The workshop, aptly titled ‘Managing Perspectives: Empowering Teenagers for Success,’ brought together diverse voices and expert guidance in a dynamic learning experience.

The event featured the combined expertise of Christine Lau, a registered counsellor from Sekolah Tunas Bakti Miri, and Dr. Anita Jimmie, a lecturer at Curtin University Malaysia’s School of Pre-University and Continuing Education (SPACE). Together, they led a session packed with actionable insights and lively discussions designed to help participants master the art of perspective-taking and build stronger connections in their daily lives.

Lau and Dr. Anita skillfully guided attendees through strategies for recognising and valuing different viewpoints, emphasising empathy and open-mindedness as essential tools for personal growth. The workshop was far from a traditional lecture – interactive role-playing exercises turned the venue into a vibrant hub of experiential learning, where participants engaged with each other in meaningful dialogue and playful discovery.

One of the workshop’s highlights was the sharing segment, where students and teachers openly exchanged their thoughts, deepening their understanding of each other’s experiences and breaking down communication barriers. The practical lessons learned not only equipped participants with techniques to manage stress and resolve conflicts but also fostered a mindset of resilience and adaptability in navigating life’s complexities.

Reflecting on the event’s success, Dr. Anita said, “The passion and engagement we witnessed today highlight just how vital it is to equip young people with the skills they need to approach life with confidence and empathy. It is about empowering them to see the world through a broader lens and recognise the value in every perspective.”

Lau echoed these sentiments, noting, “This workshop represents a significant step towards fostering stronger relationships within our communities. By learning to embrace diverse perspectives, we can bridge gaps in communication and create more harmonious and supportive environments for students, teachers, and parents alike.”

The session left a lasting impact on all who attended, with participants leaving not just with new knowledge but with a renewed sense of purpose in applying these lessons in their everyday lives.
