Curtin Sarawak organising Inter-school English Debate and Oratory Competition

Miri – 10 April 2014 – The Curtin Young Associates (CYA) and Curtin Oratory and Debating Society (CODES) of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) are organising an Inter-school English Debate and Oratory Competition at the university campus from 10 to 11 May 2014.

The competition is open to secondary school students in Sarawak between 15 and 18 years of age. Its objectives are to encourage critical and creative thinking among youth in the state and inspire them to excel in their studies.

The debate and oratory competitions will be conducted concurrently. Each school may participate in either competition or both and is allowed to send a maximum of two teams under the debate category and/or two persons under the oratory category.

The debate competition will follow the Asian Parliamentary format where the N-1 Rule applies and each team is required to send one adjudicator to participate.

Meanwhile, the oratory competition will require the participants to prepare a 7-minute speech in the first round and an impromptu 3-minute speech in the final round.

The winner team in the debate competition will win a RM3,000 cash prize, trophies and certificates of participation while the winner in the oratory competition stands to win a RM2,500 cash prize, trophy and certificate of participation.

Completed forms are to be submitted via fax to 085-443 088 or by e-mail (scanned copies) to Student Recruitment Officer and CYA Coordinator Norsari John at norsari.j@curtin.edu.my. The deadline for submissions is 17 April 2014.

The CYA is a youth outreach programme administered by the Student Recruitment Department of Curtin Sarawak and coordinated by students of the university. Currently, it has over 500 members.

CODES is one of the most successful and active student clubs at Curtin Sarawak. Its members have participated in various national and international competition including the Yayasan Sarawak English Debate Championship, Asian English Olympics Debate, Malaysia Debate Open, Sunway Debate Open and World University Debating Championship.
