Curtin Sarawak Research Institute to host international conference

Miri – 16 January 2014 – The Curtin Sarawak Research Institute (CSRI) at Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) will be hosting an international conference on the Analysis and Mathematical Applications in Engineering and Science (AMAES) at the university 19 to 22 January 2014.

The conference is collaboration between CSRI and Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) with the support of the Sarawak Convention Bureau and Sarawak Energy Berhad.

It will cover a spectrum of mathematical analysis and applications in engineering and science including optimisation techniques and applications, engineering optimisation, control theory and applications, optimal process control, dynamic systems and other focused areas.

70 delegates from all over the world are expected to attend the conference. A total of eight keynote and plenary sessions will be presented with keynote addresses by Joseph Frédéric Bonnans of Ecole Polytechnic, Paris, France and Helmut Maurer of the Institute for Computational and Applied Mathematics, University of Münster, Germany.

Ecole Polytechnic, Paris is a very elite French university founded at the time of Napolean in 1794. Many Polytechnique graduates occupy prominent positions in government, industry, and research in France. Among its alumni are two Nobel prizes winners, three Presidents of France and many CEOs of French and international companies.

University of Munster was set in 1588 and it is one of the largest and top universities in Germany. Many famous scholars and leaders of Germany have studied at the university.

Meanwhile, Louis Caccetta from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics of Curtin University; David Carmichael from the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering of University of New South Wales; and Ku Ruhana Ku Mahamud from the Graduate Department of Computer Science, College of Arts and Sciences, UUM are among the plenary speakers.

Other plenary speakers include Song Wang from the School of Mathematics and Statistics of The University of Western Australia; Ying Tan from the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of University of Melbourne; and Jerzy Filar of Flinders University.

The idea for the conference was mooted by Professor Goh Bean San, Professorial Fellow of CSRI and Professor Teo Kok Lay, John Curtin Distinguished Professor of Curtin University, both of whom are highly distinguished scholars in optimal control theory and applications.

Professor Goh Bean San is well known in the area of design of optimal rocket trajectories in space which has been used in diverse applications, including the management of biological population, while Professor Teo’s work focuses on the theoretical and practical aspects of optimal control and optimisation, such as financial portfolio optimisation and signal processing in telecommunications.

According to outgoing Director of CSRI Professor Aaron Goh, the conference will serve as a platform to put Miri city on the map for innovation and technological advancement in collaboration with top scientists around the world.

He added that in the past, CSRI research fellows have contributed to a number of key conferences in the region, including Dr. Amandeep Sidhu Singh who co-organised the Biomedical Data Infrastructure International Symposium in Kuching and Dr. Lisa Marie King who presented a paper at the 13th East Asia Inter-Regional Tourism Forum in Luang Prabang, Laos.

“One of the roles of CSRI is to promote partnership between campuses of Curtin University and external partners including academics and the various industries. Therefore, we encourage all engineers, technologists, researchers and application specialists to join this conference,” said Professor Aaron Goh.
