Curtin Sarawak’s Accounting Week enriches students’ learning experience

Miri – 4 June 2014 – In providing more opportunities for students to learn beyond their classrooms, the Accounting Club Curtin Sarawak (ACCS) of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) organised ‘Accounting Week’, a week-long series of accounting-related events, at the university’s campus recently.

The opening ceremony was launched by ACCS Advisor and Head of the Department of Accounting Cecilia Anthony Das; Vice President of the Curtin Sarawak Student Council Vinodh Rajendran; ACCS President Kelvin Chai Jian Bin and the Accounting Week Vice Organising Chairperson Lawrence Wong Yong Lian.

The event was attended by both accounting and non-accounting major students who, in addition to opportunities to strengthen their rapport with fellow students and academic staff, participated in various activities such as a jumble sale, games, industry talks and workshop, and a high tea.

At the jumble sale, students sold food, books, phone accessories, clothes and decorative items for the home as part of an activity to sharpen their entrepreneurial skills. There was also a ‘Mini Games’ session where students took part in recreational games.

An industry talk was delivered by Eleanor Shim, Manager of Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) Sarawak Chapter. In her talk, Sim spoke about the accounting industry’s expectations of graduates and the benefits of membership in MIA. She also shared her experiences in the accounting profession.

The highlight of the week was another talk by Miri’s iconic businessman, Dato’ Lau Siu Wai, who is executive chairman of the Miri Housing Group of Companies. During his talk entitled ‘Mentoring in Nurturing Entrepreneurship’, Dato’ Lau gave insights into inculcating and honing entrepreneurial skills.

The students also had the opportunity to attend an emotional excellence workshop conducted by Captain (Rtd.) Shan, a principal trainer, facilitator and coach from Teamcoach International Sdn. Bhd.

According to the secretary of the Accounting Week organising committee, Felicia Kueh Xiang Lin, the event proved a tremendous success and the ACCS will continue to organise similar events in the future to enrich the learning experience of Curtin Sarawak’s students.
