Curtin students get insights into work in the semiconductor industry
Posted date:Miri – 17 October 2022 – Guest speakers from Aemulus Corporation Sdn. Bhd., a major semiconductor company based in Bayan Lepas, Penang, recently gave a career talk to electrical and computer engineering students of Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia).
The third- and fourth-year students gained insights into career opportunities with Aemulus Corporation and the broader semiconductor industry in Malaysia and abroad. Opportunities for internships, which is a requirement for all engineering courses at Curtin, were also highlighted.
The talk was conducted in hybrid mode with the speakers comprising Aemulus Corporation’s Senior R&D Manager Marcus Lee, Senior Software Manager Teh Hooi Boon and Talent Development Specialist Jessie Ooi speaking to the students via video link in a lecture theatre at the campus.
Such hybrid talks and guest lectures are not unusual at Curtin Malaysia, where distributed learning, flipped classrooms and other forms of blended learning have featured for several years, even before the COVID-19 pandemic. A number of purpose-built learning spaces equipped with the latest learning and teaching technologies can be found across the campus.
The talk began with an introduction to the company founded in 2004, which specialises designing and developing automated test equipment (ATE) and test and measuring instruments (TMI) for the semiconductor industry. The students were then briefed on career opportunities in ATE and TMI design and development, as well as software development, with the company. They also took the opportunity to seek technical guidance from the speakers in topics related to their course, such as IC chip testing.
Associate Professor Garenth Lim King Hann and lecturer Dr. Saaveethya Sivakumar of Curtin Malaysia’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, who also attended, said it was a pleasure to collaborate with the Aemulus Corporation team on the talk.
“The talk was very beneficial to the students, covering a wide range of topics from career opportunities with Aemulus Corporation, its working environment, to the technical aspects of IC testing and related software development,” said Dr. Saaveethya.
“It was a good opportunity for them to learn from senior engineers in the company, and they learned a lot about the technical knowledge and professional skills required to work in industry.”
She said that the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering will continue working with Aemulus Corporation to create more learning opportunities for its students in the future. Curtin Malaysia collaborates with strategic partners in industry and academia in curriculum development, student development and other aspects to enrich the overall student experience.
Curtin Malaysia offers Curtin’s four-year Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (BEng Hons) which is double-accredited by Engineers Australia and the Board of Engineers Malaysia. Taught by highly-experienced teaching staff, many with extensive industrial experience, the course provides students with fundamental and advanced knowledge relevant to industry with theory, computer simulation and practical components.
