Curtin World No. 2 for mineral and mining engineering six years in a row

Miri – 12 April 2022 – Curtin University continues to be the top Australian and the second-ranked global university for mineral and mining engineering for the sixth year in a row, in the 2022 QS World University Rankings by Subject.

The latest edition, released on 5 April 2022, also placed Curtin among the top 200 universities in the world by the broad subject areas of engineering and technology, jumping 13 places to 159th globally.

The University achieved a ranking in 31 narrow subject fields with five subjects named among the top 50 in the world, including mineral and mining engineering (second), geology (34th), earth and marine sciences (40th), petroleum engineering (43rd) and geophysics (44th).

Curtin University Vice-Chancellor Professor Harlene Hayne said the rankings helped prospective students identify the leading universities in a particular subject, adding she was delighted with Curtin’s results this year.

“For the sixth year in a row, Curtin’s renowned mineral and mining engineering subjects have been ranked second globally and the top in Australia. That means our future mineral and mining engineers are learning from the best in the country and the second best in the world, confirming Curtin’s position as a global leader in the field,” Professor Hayne said.

Curtin’s pharmacy and pharmacology fields skyrocketed in the latest results to the 101-150 band, up from 251-300 previously, landing them a new national ranking of seventh in Australia.

In addition to the five narrow subjects in the top 50 globally, Curtin achieved four subject rankings in the top 100 band for architecture and built environment, civil and structural engineering, nursing, and sport-related subjects.

For the first time, Curtin was also ranked in the subject of hospitality and leisure management, placing in the 101-150 band.

The University’s business and management fields have re-entered the world’s top 200, landing in the 151-200 band.

Professor Simon Leunig, Pro Vice-Chancellor, President and Chief Executive of Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia), Curtin’s largest global campus and hub in ASEAN, said these outstanding results are most welcome as the campus ramps up its student recruitment efforts in the region.

“It is a strong testimony of the quality of education and courses Curtin delivers across all its campuses in Western Australia, Malaysia, Dubai, Singapore and Mauritius,” he said.

He added that the results were very profound for Curtin Malaysia, which offers relevant courses in the Mineral and Mining Engineering and Earth and Marine Sciences subjects, namely the Bachelor of Applied Geology, and Bachelors in Petroleum Engineering and Environmental Engineering, as well as the Master of Science in Sustainable Aquaculture

“The QS subject rankings offer the world’s most popular source of comparative data about university performance. Our students are thus assured that they are taking courses that are among the best in the world.”
