Delegation from Curtin Malaysia visits Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability

Miri – 15 January 2024 – In the interests of advancing energy and environmental sustainability in Sarawak, a delegation from Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) paid the Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability (MEESTy) Sarawak a courtesy visit recently. The visit was in conjunction with the upcoming International Conference on Green Energy, Computing, and Sustainable Technology 2024 (GECOST 2024) to be held at Curtin Malaysia on 17 January 2024.

The delegation comprised Curtin Malaysia’s Dean of Research and Development, John Curtin Distinguished Professor Ramasamy Nagarajan; Head of Department of Chemical and Energy Engineering, Professor Stephanie Chan Yen San; and Manager of External Engagement, Muhamad Rahman bin Sallehin.

The delegation was received by MEESTy Deputy Minister, Datuk Dr. Haji Hazland bin Abang Hipni, and Head of Energy Division, Ts. Dr. Nurleyna binti Yunus.

A key topic of discussion during their meeting was the upcoming GECOST 2024, an international conference that is set to be pivotal in highlighting the latest advancements and collaborations in the field of sustainable technology.

In addition to opening the conference, Datuk Dr. Haji Hazland is expected to launch two new undergraduate programmes at Curtin Malaysia – the Bachelor of Engineering in Energy Engineering (Honours) and the Bachelor of Engineering in Mechatronic Engineering (Honours) – during the conference opening ceremony. These exciting new programmes underscore Curtin Malaysia’s commitment to producing graduates who are well-equipped to tackle challenges in the energy sector.

Datuk Dr. Haji Hazland will also be a keynote speaker at GECOST 2024. His participation is expected to provide valuable insights into Malaysia’s energy policies and the Sarawak Government’s initiatives in promoting sustainable energy solutions.

This courtesy visit and the ensuing discussions signify a strengthening of relations between  Curtin Malaysia and MEESTy. It emphasises their shared dedication to fostering innovation and research in energy and environmental sustainability, vital for the future of Sarawak and beyond.
