Engineering experts gather at Curtin Malaysia to address coastal and geotechnical challenges

Miri, Sarawak – 23 May 2026 – Emerging challenges in coastal infrastructure, ground engineering, and sustainable construction took centre stage at the Geotechnical, Marine & Coastal Engineering Seminar 2026, jointly organised by the Department of Civil and Construction Engineering at Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) and Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Miri Branch.

Held on 22 April at Curtin Malaysia’s Trading Room, the seminar brought together engineers, academics, industry professionals, and students for a day of expert discussions on some of the most pressing issues facing the engineering sector today, from coastal protection and marine infrastructure to soil stabilisation and geosynthetic technologies.

The seminar featured a distinguished panel of speakers from leading engineering organisations and academia, including Budiawan Paulus Handidjaja of Sterling Technical Service Sdn Bhd, Albert Lim of Solmax, Deni Tan of Trelleborg Marine Asia Pte Ltd, Associate Professor Ir Dr Wong Kwong Soon from Curtin Malaysia, and Wong Meng Siang of NBT Base and Pave.

A key highlight of the event was a live soil stabilisation demonstration presented by Wong Meng Siang, showcasing innovative ground improvement techniques and practical engineering solutions used in modern infrastructure projects.

Throughout the seminar, the speakers shared industry insights, case studies, and emerging technologies aimed at improving resilience, sustainability, and efficiency in civil and coastal engineering practices.

Beyond technical discussions, the seminar also served as a valuable platform for professional networking and collaboration between academia and industry, reinforcing the importance of knowledge-sharing in driving engineering innovation.

Curtin Malaysia continues to strengthen industry engagement and professional learning opportunities through initiatives that support the advancement of civil and construction engineering in the region and beyond.
