First-ever Journalism Summer Camp 2025 sparks creativity and skills in young media talent
Posted date:Miri, Sarawak – 16 August 2025 – The just-concluded Journalism Summer Camp 2025, held at Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia), left 23 budding journalists and content creators brimming with new skills, confidence, and inspiration after an intensive five-day journey into the world of media.
Jointly organised by Alpha Skills Academy and Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia), the camp transformed Curtin Malaysia’s state-of-the-art facilities into a bustling media hub, bringing together students from the university and children from PACTS Schools, a non-governmental organisation providing education for underprivileged youth.
The inclusive programme was designed to give participants a real taste of life in journalism and media production. They learned from some of Malaysia’s most recognisable media figures, including JJ Fernandez, legendary radio personality and media pioneer; Zarina Zainal, a seasoned PR strategist with 16 years’ industry experience; and Azura Zainal, renowned entertainment host, emcee, and radio presenter.
Over the five days, the participants were immersed in practical workshops covering communication skills, news writing, interviewing techniques, and modern digital media formats such as podcasting and video production. They took part in simulated press conferences, on-camera interviews, and rapid-fire creative projects, pushing their storytelling abilities to new heights.
The camp also celebrated cultural diversity, with a special Japanese dance workshop by Yuriko Yamamoto from the Japan Foundation. More than 50 Curtin Malaysia students and staff joined the lively evening session, learning the spirited Soran Bushi and the festive Bon Odori, adding a colourful twist to the learning experience.
The grand finale came with a video showcase at The Auditorium, where participants proudly premiered four original productions – Jack and Jill, The Tonight Show with Joann, Who Needs Rehearsals Anyways, and The World Inside of Me. The creativity and polish on display drew high praise from the trainers.
“Seeing the videos at the end of the camp, I know we sparked something in these kids that can only grow, so they can shine together,” said JJ Fernandez. “I can’t wait for the next one.”
Onny Maathai, camp organising chair and Co-Founder of PACTS Schools, expressed heartfelt thanks to Curtin Malaysia for its support. “The strong partnership and commitment have truly made this camp a success. We look forward to creating even more opportunities together.”
With its successful debut, the Journalism Summer Camp has set the stage for a lasting collaboration between Alpha Skills Academy and Curtin Malaysia, promising more initiatives to empower the next generation of storytellers and media innovators.
