First ‘Professor for a Day’ at Curtin Malaysia

Miri – 31 May 2022 – Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) recently held its first ‘Professor for a Day’ event featuring Associate Professor Hiram Ting, co-founder of the Sarawak Research Society and an associate professor at UCSI University Kuching Campus.

‘Professor for a Day’ is a new social engagement platform developed by Prof. Andreas Zins, Dean of the Faculty of Business at Curtin Malaysia, and Dr. Tiong Ying Ying, the Faculty’s Associate Dean of Research and Development.

The initiative is aimed at bringing business leaders, government and industry representatives, academics of other higher education institutions and members of research bodies, as well as successful alumni of the university, to Curtin Malaysia for various forms of engagement, including guest lectures and dialogues, with its senior management, faculty members, students and alumni.

In this inaugural ‘Professor for a Day’ event, several sessions were held where Assoc. Prof. Ting engaged with senior management, faculty staff, researchers and students. He got together with members of the senior management, Prof. Zins and Curtin researchers to brief them on the Sarawak Research Society’s activities and future research collaboration under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with the university.

This was followed by a session with 17 Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students where Assoc. Prof. Ting discussed publication and research opportunities with the Sarawak Research Society.

Further sessions included a meeting with Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof. Vincent Lee Chien Chen and senior academics of the Faculty of Business, including Prof. Zins, Dr. Tiong, and Faculty research cluster heads Dr. Adamu Abbas Adamu and Dr. Rubaiyat Ahsan Bhuiyan, heads of department Dr. Samuel Adeyinka-Ojo and Dr. Ramez Badeeb, and department representative Dr. Oladokun Nafiu Olaniyi, where avenues for publications were discussed for a journal Assoc. Prof. Ting has initiated. Dean of Faculty of Engineering and Science Prof. Tuong-Thuy Vu also attended the meeting on behalf of the Faculty of Engineering and Science.

“Working visits by fellow academics and researchers from other higher education institutions needn’t be just business-as-usual. They can be highly engaging and enriching experiences where ideas and knowledge can be exchanged, and relationships enhanced,” said Prof. Zins.

“We look forward to inviting many more guests for future events, including successful corporate figures and Curtin Malaysia alumni who have made their mark in industry, and perhaps even social media influencers and artists. The important difference for these leaders is that they want to come to university and share their experiences with students and staff.”

Assoc. Prof. Ting’s visit to Curtin Malaysia ended with a presentation of a ‘Professor for a Day’ certificate of appreciation to Assoc. Prof. Ting by Prof. Lee.
