Guest lecture prepares Curtin Malaysia students for real-world legal challenges
Posted date:Miri, Sarawak – 30 August 2025 – Faculty of Business students at Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) recently had the rare opportunity to learn directly from a practising lawyer when Victor Sia Kie Ching, Managing Partner of Sia, Alvin Wong & Partners, delivered a guest lecture on ‘Terms and Conditions of a Valid Contract’.
The lecture, part of Curtin Malaysia’s Classroom-to-Field programme supported by its Office of Learning and Teaching, was held at the Harry Perkins Lecture Theatre and drew strong participation from students enrolled in the Contract Law unit.
Blending legal theory with professional practice, Sia highlighted how the principles of contract law underpin commercial agreements and everyday business relationships. “Contracts are the foundation of business,” he explained. “Understanding their validity is essential not only for lawyers but also for anyone involved in commerce. It was a pleasure to share with such engaged students how these principles come alive in practice.”
The session featured an interactive Q&A, where students tested their knowledge, clarified complex points, and gained practical advice on applying legal concepts to real-world scenarios.
Dr. Mohammad Belayet Hossain, Lecturer in Business Law and organiser of the event, said the initiative was designed to give students authentic learning experiences beyond the classroom. “Our goal is to ensure students do not just study legal concepts in theory, but also engage with professionals who apply them every day. These exchanges deepen their understanding and prepare them for the realities of legal practice,” he said.
Professor Pauline Ho, Dean of the Faculty of Business, praised the initiative for advancing Curtin Malaysia’s mission of providing industry-relevant education. “At Curtin Malaysia, we place a strong emphasis on connecting classroom learning with professional practice. Programmes like Classroom-to-Field empower our students to strengthen their knowledge, sharpen their skills, and build the confidence to succeed in competitive industries,” she said.
The event reinforced Curtin Malaysia’s commitment to producing well-rounded graduates equipped with both academic knowledge and professional readiness to thrive in today’s fast-changing legal and business environment.
