IEM Miri STEM Camp inspires rural students to explore future in STEM
Posted date:Miri, Sarawak – 2 October 2026 – About 110 secondary school students and teachers from three rural schools in Subis Division stepped into the world of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) at Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) recently, gaining hands-on exposure to innovation, problem-solving and potential STEM careers.
The students and teachers from SMK Subis, SMK Bakong and SMK Luar Bandar Miri took part in the IEM Miri STEM Camp 2026 on 12 September, jointly organised by the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) Miri Branch and the Faculty of Engineering and Science at Curtin Malaysia.
Held under the theme “Inovasi Hari Ini, Inspirasi Masa Depan” (Innovation Today, Inspiration Tomorrow), the camp was funded by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) to provide rural students with opportunities for practical STEM learning that may otherwise be limited by geographical barriers.
The programme featured a range of interactive activities designed to bring classroom concepts to life, giving participants opportunities to experiment, create and solve problems in an engaging environment.
Professor Ir. Dr. Stephanie Chan Yen San, Chairman of the IEM Miri Branch and Organising Chairman of the camp, said the initiative was about more than introducing students to STEM subjects; it was about broadening their horizons and showing them the possibilities that STEM can offer.
“Many of these students come from schools where opportunities to engage with STEM beyond the classroom are few and far between. Through this camp, we wanted to show them that science, technology, engineering and mathematics aren’t just subjects to be memorised – they are tools they can use to solve real problems and shape their own futures,” she said.
She added that the curiosity and enthusiasm shown by the participants throughout the camp reinforced the importance of bringing STEM opportunities to underserved communities.
The experience also left a strong impression on the students. Cassandra Rivera Suntha, a Form 4 student from SMK Luar Bandar Miri, said the camp gave her a new perspective on STEM and its relevance to everyday life and future careers.
“I learned about our future and the prospects of careers in STEM. I also discovered the many uses of pi in daily life – it is all around us! I had a lot of fun with the 3D pens, and with the hydrogen car, I got to see and understand how it actually works,” she said.
Fellow participant Najwa Damia Yuslan of SMK Subis said the programme increased students’ awareness of the importance of STEM and its role in shaping the future.
For teachers, the camp provided an engaging environment for students to learn beyond the classroom. Siti Sufia Saibi, a teacher from SMK Bakong, described the experience as both meaningful and enjoyable.
“The relaxed and interactive atmosphere allowed students to learn without feeling pressured. I am truly grateful to the organisers for giving us this opportunity, and I hope that programmes like this can continue in the future,” she said.
The camp was supported by co-chairs Jameson Malang, Dr. Yong Leong Kong and Lim Chuan Jet, together with teachers from the participating schools, whose dedication and support contributed to the success of the programme.
Special recognition was also given to the IEM Young Engineers Section (YES) Miri Branch and the IEM Curtin Malaysia Student Section for their enthusiasm, teamwork and behind-the-scenes support throughout the camp.
For the IEM Miri Branch, the STEM camp marks part of its continuing commitment to nurturing a culture of science, technology and innovation among rural students and ensuring that geographical distance does not limit young people’s opportunities to discover their potential in STEM.
