International scholars converge in Miri for 2024 AAOM and TAOM Conferences

Miri, Sarawak – 3 July 2024 – Miri recently became a global hub of academic exchange as over 250 participants from various countries gathered for the 2024 Asia Academy of Management (AAOM) and Taiwan Academy of Management (TAOM) Conferences, held concurrently from June 25 to 29.

Held at the Pullman Miri Waterfront here, and co-hosted by Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia), the conferences revolved around the theme ‘Asian Management in the Post-pandemic Era: Challenges and Opportunities.’ This prestigious biannual event brought together leading scholars from around the world, fostering robust dialogue and innovative solutions to advance Asian management practices.

The conferences kicked off with the AAOM PhD Consortium at Curtin Malaysia, dedicated to doctoral students and chaired by Professor Mike Peng, Jindai Distinguished Chair at the University of Texas at Dallas, USA. Under his guidance and with input from esteemed professors from Australia, the United States, China, Denmark, and Malaysia, doctoral students engaged in roundtable sessions, research discussions, and an editors’ panel on publishing in high-impact journals.

Professor Simon Leunig, Pro Vice-Chancellor, President and Chief Executive of Curtin Malaysia, officiated the 2024 AAOM and TAOM Conferences. In his opening remarks, Professor Leunig expressed Curtin Malaysia’s honour in co-hosting the conferences.

“This event reflects Curtin Malaysia’s commitment to driving innovation and sustainability through research and education. It is a great privilege to welcome delegates from around the world to Miri and facilitate meaningful discussions that will shape the future of management practices in Asia,” he said.

The conferences attracted participants from diverse countries, including Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, the United States, Singapore, Australia, Macau, Spain, Canada, Vietnam, and Malaysia. Prestigious institutions such as the National University of Singapore, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the University of Florida, Australian National University, Peking University, Nanjing University, Zhejiang University, Concordia University Montréal, and National Taiwan University were represented, creating a vibrant mix of academics, practitioners, and students united by a common goal of advancing management knowledge and practices in Asia.

Keynote speakers included Professor Jane Lu, President of AAOM and Professor at the City University of Hong Kong; Professor Shige Makino from Kyoto University; and Professor Kaifeng Jiang from Peking University. Their insights and expertise provided valuable perspectives on various management aspects, significantly enriching the conference.

The conferences featured a wide range of presentations on topics such as Strategic Management, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Human Resource Management, International Management, Organisational and Management Theory, and Organisational Behaviour. These sessions facilitated robust discussions and the exchange of cutting-edge research findings, furthering the understanding and application of management practices in the Asian context.

On the final day of the conferences, participants enjoyed a day trip to the Borneo Tropical Rainforest Resort, exploring Sarawak’s rich flora and fauna. This excursion provided a refreshing break from the academic sessions and an opportunity to experience the natural beauty of Sarawak.

Looking ahead, RMIT Vietnam will host the 2026 AAOM Conference in Ho Chi Minh City, promising another valuable platform for scholarly exchange and collaboration.
