Leadership and Coaching for Entrepreneurs workshop at Curtin Sarawak on 11 February

Miri – 4 February 2015 – The Faculty of Business and Humanities of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) is organising a ‘Masterclass: Leadership and Coaching for Entrepreneurs’ workshop in collaboration with the International Council for SME and Entrepreneurship, Malaysia (ICSMEE Malaysia) on 11 February 2015.

Open to local entrepreneurs and members of the local business community, it will be from 8.30 am to 4.30 pm at the university’s Learning Centre 1 & 2 (Hornbill 2). Participation is free of charge and refreshments and lunch will be provided.

Associate Professor Pauline Ho, acting dean of the Faculty of Business and Humanities, said that the faculty’s ongoing partnership with ICSMEE Malaysia has helped its business students acquire greater entrepreneurial knowledge and advance its research into improving the productivity and performance of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

ICSMEE Malaysia is an independent organisation whose main objectives are to advance the understanding of entrepreneurship and improve the competitiveness of SMEs. It facilitates the creation and distribution of new knowledge through training, education, research and open exchanges of ideas between professions and across national and cultural borders.

Associate Professor Ho also said the workshop is part of the faculty’s continuing engagement with the local business community aimed at promoting entrepreneurship and good business practices and building closer and meaningful relationships.

The workshop will be facilitated by Captain (Retired) Shanmugam D. Moorthi, the CEO and founder, as well as principal trainer, facilitator and coach, of Teamcoach International Sdn. Bhd. in Kuala Lumpur. The company specialises in leadership and team related facilitation, training and coaching services to help organisations and individuals improve their leadership and team qualities.

More popularly known as Captain (Rtd.) Shan, he will help the participants understand and appreciate the seven core principles of leading with purpose and passion, the five behavioural dimensions of personality to develop emotional excellence to lead self and others, and the principles of entrepreneurial coaching.

In addition, the participants will also be able to take away five powerful tools for effective coaching, apply the entrepreneurial coaching model, and experience the power of coaching for performance.

According to Capt. Shan, surveys have shown that effective leadership and coaching processes can help motivate entrepreneurs to unleash their strengths and potential.

“Entrepreneurs need to lead with clarity of purpose and passion, to be more solution-focused in overcoming entrepreneurial leadership challenges. This results in emotions that provide intrinsic motivation for their teams to perform better,” he said.

He added that coaching as a leadership initiative empowers the entrepreneur to be more creative and innovative in leading their teams. It enables them to lead using an open and inclusive approach that creates a strong and positive unit, and ultimately ensure high performance and sustainable growth.

Over the past 20 years, Captain Shan has facilitated workshops and learning sessions across Asia on various aspects of leadership, team development and performance coaching. His innovative, interactive and high impact approaches empower his participants to experience, reflect and act for self and organisational improvements.

He is a John Maxwell-certified coach, trainer and speaker. His other professional certifications include Certified Professional Marketer by Asia Pacific Marketing Federation (CPM-APMF); Certified Solution Focused Coach – Canadian Council for Professional Certification (CSFC-CCPC); Certified Performance Coach (University of Ballarat, Australia); Senior LPI Licensed Consultant and LPI Licensed Life Coach; and Certified EQ Trainer by Six Seconds, USA.

In addition, he is a member of the Global Board of Governors, International Association of Coaching; founding president of the Malaysian Association of Facilitators and International Association of Coaching, Malaysia Chapter; founding member of the Institute of Coaching Professional Association at McLean Hospital (a Harvard Medical School affiliate); life member of the Institute of Marketing Malaysia; and vice-president (CPD) of the Malaysian Association for Learning and Development.

This will be the second workshop facilitated by Capt. Shan at Curtin Sarawak. In May last year, he facilitated a ‘Coaching and Mentoring: Emotional Excellence’ workshop organised by the Faculty of Business and Humanities and the university’s University Life Department.
