Miri, Sarawak – 15 July 2024 – Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) recently hosted an engaging and insightful industry session with media industry expert and Curtin Malaysia alumnus, Amirul Hafiz Muhd. Firdaus Abong, known widely as thoruss on social media.

Amirul, a distinguished content creator and Lead of Content Creation and Multimedia Design at a leading local television station, captivated the audience of Foundation and Diploma students with his profound insights into the dynamic world of television content creation. The session delved into the complete journey of content production, from the spark of an idea to the final stages of post-production.

Sharing his wealth of experience, Amirul highlighted the critical roles of creativity, technical expertise, and staying ahead of industry trends in crafting engaging television content. “Returning to Curtin Malaysia as an alumnus and sharing my journey with current students is incredibly fulfilling. It’s an honour to give back to the university, and hopefully inspire the future trailblazers of the media industry,” he remarked.

The session struck a chord with the students, offering a rare, practical glimpse into the media sector. First-year Diploma of Media Studies student, Maybelle Myra Tay Anak Micheal Tay described the session as ‘an eye-opening experience into the workings of the industry’, while final-year student Adlynna Batrisyia Ahmadul Adi emphasised, “Getting an insider’s perspective is invaluable and will greatly prepare me for my upcoming internship.”

Peter Jamba, Associate Teaching Fellow for the Foundation of Arts and Diploma of Media Studies, lauded the event, stating, “Having alumni like Amirul share their professional journeys and insights bridges the gap between our curriculum and the evolving demands of the media industry. These sessions are instrumental in equipping our students with the skills and knowledge needed for successful careers.”

The event concluded with an engaging Q&A session, allowing the students to interact directly with Amirul and deepen their understanding of the media landscape.
