Miri Water Forum 2025 to tackle Sarawak’s water future

Miri, Sarawak – 13 August 2025 – With Sarawak’s rapid industrial growth and expanding urban centres placing unprecedented demands on its water resources, Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) and its partners will host the Miri Water Forum 2025 on 23 August 2025 to chart a sustainable path forward for the state’s water infrastructure.

Jointly organised with Pustaka Negeri Sarawak, Miri, the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Miri Branch, and the IEM Young Engineers Section (YES) Miri, the forum will take place at Pustaka Negeri Sarawak’s auditorium in Miri under the theme ‘Advancing Water Infrastructure in Sarawak: Balancing Strategic Management and Technological Innovation’.

The one-day event will bring together government leaders, industry experts, academics, and civil society representatives to explore practical, forward-looking solutions for both rural and urban water systems.

Headlining the programme is a keynote address by Ir. Ts. Awg Mohammad Fadillah Awg Redzuan, Director of the Sarawak Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB), followed by a high-level panel discussion featuring senior representatives from the Department of Mineral and Geoscience Malaysia, Sarawak Water Sdn. Bhd., the Department of Environment (DOE), the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB), and Curtin Malaysia.

Organising Chair Ir. Dr. Tan Yee Yong underscored the urgency of the discussions, citing Sarawak’s transformation into a regional industrial and green energy hub.

“As industries expand and cities grow, water will be the lifeblood of sustainable development. While Sarawak has abundant surface water, effective management and modern infrastructure are essential to meet future demand,” he said.

He added that the forum will spotlight innovative technologies, strategic planning, and collaborative approaches tailored to Sarawak’s unique geography and socio-economic priorities.

“This is a call to action for all stakeholders to work together in shaping the future of Sarawak’s water industry,” he emphasised.

The Miri Water Forum 2025 is free to attend, but seats are limited and early registration is encouraged. The Water Forum will serve as a platform or townhall session to share and engage stakeholders on the water infrastructure development plan.
