Over 160 students and teachers dive into innovation at Curtin Malaysia’s EduXperience: STEAM Carnival

Miri, Sarawak – 12 September 2025Over 160 students and teachers from SMK Luar Bandar Miri were immersed in a day of creativity, innovation, and discovery at the EduXperience: STEAM Carnival, an outreach programme spearheaded by Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) in collaboration with the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Miri Branch.

The carnival, held from 9 am to 2 pm, transformed the school into a hub of hands-on learning where students explored Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) through workshops, competitions, and interactive showcases designed to spark curiosity and build confidence.

From exciting STEAM Fairs for lower secondary students to a high-energy Battle of the Builders’ – Build & Break Competition for all levels, the carnival offered something for everyone. Senior students honed problem-solving skills in the SuCCESS Math Workshop, while Form Six students took part in the Level Up Leadership Workshop, sharpening their teamwork and leadership abilities. Teachers, too, benefitted from workshops on stress management and financial planning, underscoring the event’s holistic approach to education and well-being.

One of the highlights was the Battle of the Builders, where participants combined creativity, engineering, and teamwork to design, test, and compete with their constructions in a spirited challenge organised by IEM and the IEM Curtin Malaysia Student Section. Meanwhile, students from Curtin Malaysia’s Health, Safety and Environment programme engaged participants through an environmental awareness booth, driving home the importance of sustainability in everyday life.

Altogether, 33 Curtin Malaysia staff, 21 students, and two IEM representatives collaborated with SMK Luar Bandar Miri teachers to deliver the event, making it a true community effort.

Organising Chairperson Jameson Malang, Teaching Fellow from Curtin Malaysia’s School of Pre-U and Continuing Education (SPACE), said the carnival was about more than just learning. “Our goal was to ignite a love for STEAM subjects while also building resilience, leadership, and environmental awareness. It is our way of giving back to the community and inspiring the next generation of changemakers,” he remarked.

Co-organising Chairpersons Eliane Choo Yuan Syn and Imelda Anak Baran from SMK Luar Bandar Miri noted that student response was overwhelmingly positive, with many asking for more similar events in the future.

The EduXperience: STEAM Carnival reflects Curtin Malaysia’s commitment to empowering communities through education and engagement, providing rural students with transformative experiences that prepare them for both academic and personal success.
