Pei Min students explore real-world careers in Accounting and Finance with Curtin Malaysia

Miri, Sarawak – 29 April 2025Over 100 students at Pei Min Middle School got a fresh and exciting look at careers in accounting and finance during an outreach session conducted by Curtin University Malaysia’s Faculty of Business recently.

Designed to break stereotypes and spark new interests, the session was led by Faculty of Business lecturers Yip Ka Yii and Dr. Ivy Hii, who delivered the session bilingually to ensure every student could fully engage with the content.

The Accounting segment kicked off with a lively quiz that challenged students’ perceptions of the field. It was followed by a myth-busting talk that revealed the real-world impact and versatility of accounting careers. The session wrapped up with an eye-opening overview of job prospects and academic pathways, giving students a clearer sense of the exciting future awaiting them in the profession.

In the Finance segment, the students explored the importance of personal money management through a relatable and practical financial literacy talk. They also learned about diverse career opportunities in the financial sector and the academic programmes that can help them get there.

The session not only opened the students’ eyes to professional possibilities, it also encouraged them to dream big. Information on the Free tertiary Education Scheme (FTES) initiatives in Sarawak was shared, underscoring the message that higher education in accounting and finance is both valuable and accessible.

“Beyond numbers and spreadsheets, these careers are about solving problems and creating value,” said Dr. Hii. “We want students to see that they can make a real difference in the world through these professions.”

The initiative is part of Curtin Malaysia’s broader commitment to community engagement and empowering the next generation of professionals across Sarawak.
