Photography Workshop brings professional insights to Curtin Malaysia enthusiasts

Miri, Sarawak – 19 August 2025 – Some 40 budding and seasoned photographers from Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) recently sharpened their creative eye at a hands-on photography workshop conducted by the Sarawak Photo Arts Society (SPAS) under its Campus Outreach Programme.

Backed by the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak, the half-day workshop at Curtin Malaysia was the fourth stop in a statewide educational tour aimed at nurturing young creative talent. Previous sessions were held at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), University of Technology Sarawak (UTS), and Politeknik Mukah, with the final leg scheduled at Universiti Putra Malaysia Sarawak in Bintulu.

The workshop, led by SPAS President Kelvin Chan, gave participants exclusive exposure to professional-level techniques through live demonstrations and interactive practice. From mastering model posing strategies and achieving visual balance in portrait composition, to experimenting with lighting for mood and depth, the attendees gained practical skills applicable to both professional and personal photography pursuits.

“The workshop offered invaluable tips and creative insights. Expanding this into a full-day session with more interactive practice and mobile photography modules would take it to the next level,” said one Curtin Malaysia staff participant.

Chan emphasised that the initiative is not only about teaching techniques but also about empowering Sarawak’s creative community.

“Equipping photographers with technical expertise and artistic vision is more than just about skills; it is about unlocking transformative potential for Sarawak’s creative landscape,” he said.

The event reflects Sarawak’s broader vision to strengthen its creative economy by fostering grassroots talent in photography and the visual arts.

Curtin Malaysia, as the host venue, reaffirmed its commitment to supporting programmes that inspire students and staff to explore creative fields alongside their academic pursuits.
