Curtin Sarawak ECE staff attend F-secure and MDeC programme

Miri – 9 October 2014 – Three staff of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), School of Engineering and Science of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak), attended the recent ‘F-secure – MDeC Train the Trainer’ programme held in Cyberjaya.

The objective of the five-day programme was to meet the growing demand of industry relevant K-workers (knowledge workers) in the developing area of information system security, particularly in the malware analysis field.

The programme covered topics such as window automation, techniques and tools for reverse engineering of executable files and mobile platform Android Apps. It was conducted by F-secure Labs Senior Manager of Threat Research Edilberto Cajucom, Security Advisor for Asia Pacific Goh Su Gim and Service Manager Chang Kim Ming.

According to senior lecturer of computer systems and head of Bachelor of Technology (Computer Systems and Networking) programme Veeramani Shanmugam, the programme helped to enhance his skills in reverse engineering tools and system automation.

“It also gave me the opportunity to take part in intellectual discussion with my counterparts from different institutions and the security specialist from F-Secure,” said Veeramani.

Associate lecturer Suresh Reuben commented that reverse engineering is an interesting topic that should be incorporated in the university’s course teaching, adding that Curtin Sarawak’s graduates can benefit greatly from such knowledge and skills.

Meanwhile, ECE Department Industrial and External Relations Advisor Dr. Garenth Lim King Hann said F-secure, the world’s top anti-virus company, offers internship placements and job opportunities for current ECE students and fresh graduates.

MDeC (Multimedia Development Corporation) and F-Secure partnered up in 2009 as part of the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) Malaysia Industry Academia Collaboration initiative to bring knowledge, skills and industry tools to institutions of higher learning across Malaysia.

F-secure was founded in 1988 with approximately 940 employees in 20 offices around the world. Its main headquarters is located in Helsinki, Finland. MDeC was incorporated in 1996 to oversee the development of the MSC Malaysia and advise the Malaysian Government on legislation and policies, as well as to set breakthrough standards for multimedia operations.
