Miri Kidney Dialysis Centre and Sunflower Centre receive funds from Curtin Sarawak

Miri – 20 November 2014 – The Malaysia Red Crescent (MRC) Voluntary Aid Detachment 57 (VAD 57) of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) recently donated RM1,455 to the MRC Miri Kidney Dialysis Centre and Sunflower Centre.

The funds were collected from a Halloween-themed fundraising event ‘Phantom Charity Fest’ organised by the detachment earlier this month at the university’s Recreation and Event Centre.

VAD 57 is a detachment of MRC registered under the MRC Miri Chapter and operates under the supervision of Curtin Sarawak’s Office of Students Affairs. It has been the recipient of the ‘Best VAD Unit Award’ in Sarawak for seven consecutive years since 2008.

In its effort to raise awareness of the importance of acquiring first aid knowledge, VAD 57 provides first aid assistance and organises first aid training for the campus community, including training for members of over 40 student clubs in the university.

The detachment is also actively organises community service activities and emergency-related events such its Health and Safety Month Exhibition, Water Safety Course, Survival Life Camp, Ambulance Service Training and annual mock exercise to build the readiness of the campus community in the event of emergencies.

According to VAD 57 commandant Lee Ren Jie, being a member of MRC provides students the opportunity to garner knowledge of first aid, as well as experience in organising events on and off campus.

“The scope of our activities not only covers first aid training, but also disaster management, international humanitarian law and other related activities, which help our members develop critical leadership and management skills,” commented Lee.
