Curtin Sarawak Open Day gets support from business and public sectors and NGOs
Posted date:Miri – 18 September 2014 – Community support for the Curtin Sarawak Open Day to be held at the campus of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) this Saturday is quite substantial, with over 60 corporate bodies and individuals sponsoring or participating in the event.
According to Curtin Sarawak Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Jim Mienczakowski, this reflects the fact that the Curtin Sarawak Open Day has grown into a major community event over the last eight years. The Miri City Council continues to be the event partner and the event enjoys widespread support from the local media, local businesses, individual donors, government bodies and non-governmental organisations.
In thanking them, Professor Mienczakowski said that many are recurring supporters which continue to support the event year after year.
“It shows their commitment to ensuring the continued success of the university and our role as the leading educational institution in Miri and one of the top-rated universities in Malaysia,” he said.
He added that the Curtin Sarawak Open Day attracts thousands of visitors keen to discover what the university has to offer, as well as celebrate its achievements and contributions to education, research, human capital and social development in Sarawak through the years. Last year, over 7,000 people attended and the university is keen to see the number exceed 10,000 this year.
Meanwhile, organising chairman Nicholas Leong disclosed that to date, close to 40 corporate bodies and individuals are sponsoring the event, which also promotes environmental and charitable causes.

Meanwhile, Royal Brunei Airlines is sponsoring a return air ticket to Melbourne for the event’s grand lucky draw, complementing prizes sponsored by Planet Borneo Tours & Travel Services, Grand Palace Hotel, Eastwood Valley Golf & Country Club, Miri Marriott Resort & Spa, ParkCity Everly Hotel Miri, Imperial Hotel, Meritz Hotel, Typhoon Digital Imaging, ShaShinKi.Com, Syarikat Takaful Malaysia, Aim-Exact Services and GSC Bintang Megamall.
The prizes for the event’s two grand lucky draws include Sony Bravia 32” LED flatscreen TVs, Sony Cybershot DSC-QX10 and Fuji X-A1 digital cameras, Sony Sports MP3 player, Lenovo S930 and A880 smartphones, Asus Fonepad 7 tablet phones, HP DeskJet printer and Acer Iconia W4 tablet.
A number of NGOs are also showing their support by participating in the ‘Charity & Community Corner’ and other showcases. They are Agensi Anti Dadah Kebangsaan, Cleft Lip & Palate Association, Columbia Asia Hospital Miri, Human Life Service, Kelab Sosial & Kebajikan Harmoni, Mental Health Association of Sarawak, Miri Hospital, Palliative Care Home Programme, Persatuan Kebangsaan Autisme Malaysia, Pharmacy Enforcement SSHD, Piasau Animal Welfare Support, PIBAKIS/PDK Miri, Red Crescent VAD 57, Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society, Sarawak Family Planning Association, TAGS Spine & Joint Specialists, Miri Polyclinic and Zero Strays.
This is in addition to some 40 student social and academic clubs at Curtin Sarawak that will operate stalls selling a wide variety of food and beverages, conduct games and activities, and promote their club activities.
Curtin Sarawak’s School of Business and School of Engineering and Science will collaborate with the university’s Curtin Sarawak Research Institute; its consultancy arm, Curtin Consultancy (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd., and its Department of Language Studies and Humanities to stage an ‘Innovation Expo’ for visitors. The expo will showcase the teaching and learning and R&D strengths of the various areas of the university.
About 15 local businesses, including local eateries, hotels, travel agencies and tour operators and banks, will also be participating.
