Curtin Sarawak announces new Dean of Faculty of Business and Humanities

Miri – 11 March 2015 – Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Jonathan Winterton as its new Dean of Faculty of Business and Humanities.

A British national, Professor Winterton brings over 30 years’ experience in higher education and has held senior academic leadership positions since 1997.

After an apprenticeship in engineering, he gained a BSc (first class honours) in Industrial Technology at Bradford University, then an MSc(Econ) in Industrial Relations from the London School of Economics and a PhD in Economics and Business Studies from the University of Leeds.

His early academic career included positions as Lecturer in Industrial Technology at Bradford University and Senior Lecturer in Industrial Relations at Bradford School of Management.

He was appointed to his first chair in 1997 as Professor of Employment and the first Director of the Employment Research Institute at Edinburgh Napier University.

Professor Winterton moved to Toulouse Business School, France, in 2000 as Director of Research then in 2011 as Director of International Affairs. By 2003, Toulouse Business School had achieved EQUIS, AACSB and AMBA accreditation and has since remained part of the elite band of triple-accredited business schools.

Professor Winterton holds visiting positions at the University of Auckland Business School and Leeds University Business School, and is launching an EU-ASEAN research network at the Asia Pacific Association for International Education Conference in Beijing.

In addition to teaching and research in the UK and France, Professor Winterton has significant international experience in Malaysia, Brunei, Germany, Hungary, Lithuania, Moldova, New Zealand, Slovenia, the United States and Vietnam.

He has served as a member of the UK Skills Task Force Research Group; as European Commission Expert on behalf of the European Trade Union Confederation; and as Advisor to the Labour Market Training Authority in Lithuania.

An experienced researcher with expertise in a wide range of research methods, Professor Winterton has published some 40 academic journal papers, 40 chapters in edited collections and 6 books.

He has presented over 250 papers at conferences worldwide and is frequently invited as a keynote speaker.

His specialist domains are employment and European labour markets; employment relations and training; restructuring and change; management development and leadership. His latest book, Trade union strategies for developing competence at work within the New Europe, edited with Professor Mark Stuart at the University of Leeds, will be published by Routledge later this year.

Meanwhile, Professor Winterton is looking forward to working with his colleagues at Curtin Sarawak and leading the Faculty of Business and Humanities.
