Preserving heritage through folktales: Curtin Malaysia initiative brings Kayan stories to life for indigenous children
Posted date:Miri, Sarawak – 21 December 2024 – A heartwarming initiative aimed at preserving cultural heritage and fostering a sense of belonging among indigenous children unfolded on 27 November 2024, when Dr. Roselind Wan, Academic Skills Advisor from Curtin University Malaysia’s Office of Learning and Teaching, visited Sekolah Kebangsaan Long Panai in Baram’s Tutoh region.
Joining her was Dr. Yasuka Fukaya from Kyushu University, Japan. Together, they embarked on a mission to revive Kayan folktales by compiling them into vibrant illustrated children’s books. These timeless tales, deeply rooted in Kayan culture, not only preserve moral lessons but also serve as an educational bridge, enriching indigenous children’s learning experiences.
During the visit, the duo emphasised the pivotal role of folktales in connecting children to their cultural roots while making education relatable and engaging. They shared their vision of documenting these narratives to ensure future generations inherit the wisdom and values of their ancestors.
Adding a creative flair to the initiative, Japanese artist Yuhki Takeuchi conducted an inspiring art session with students. Takeuchi’s illustrations breathe life into beloved Kayan characters such as Lebui, Duyu, Hingan Jan, and Duruiyah Sekutok, blending traditional storytelling with modern artistry.
“Our stories are treasures of cultural wisdom, bridging the past and present. By integrating these tales into education, we not only preserve heritage but also inspire children to embrace their identity,” said Dr. Roselind.
This initiative underscores the urgency of safeguarding oral traditions, which are at risk of fading into obscurity. By transforming oral stories into accessible, illustrated books, communities like the Kayan can secure their cultural legacy while igniting a love for storytelling in younger generations.
The visit to SK Long Panai highlights a shared commitment to cultural preservation and education, fostering pride and connection within indigenous communities. It serves as a reminder that the stories of yesterday have the power to shape the leaders and dreamers of tomorrow.
