Riam Hill empowers teens with cyber law session by Curtin Malaysia legal expert

Miri, Sarawak – 12 June 2025 — In an age where young people live much of their lives online, Riam Hill International Secondary School is taking bold steps to ensure its students understand the legal boundaries of the digital world.

In an interactive session held recently at the school’s lecture theatre, Dr. Mohammad Belayet Hossain, a Lecturer in Law at Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia), delivered an insightful talk titled ‘Digital Actions, Your Legal Responsibility: Understanding Cyber Laws’.

Targeting students aged 11 to 17, the event aimed to raise awareness of Malaysian cyber laws, cultivate responsible online behaviour, and highlight the real-life consequences of cybercrimes.

From cyberbullying and online scams to data privacy and hacking, Dr. Belayet broke down complex legislation, including the Computer Crimes Act 1997, Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, and the Penal Code, into relatable concepts using real-world examples, interactive polls, and a live quiz.

“Technology empowers us, but it also comes with responsibility. Every click, post, or download has a consequence,” said Dr. Belayet, drawing nods from an audience clearly engaged with the topic.

The students were not passive observers. They participated enthusiastically, asked thoughtful questions, and even shared personal digital experiences, demonstrating a clear understanding of their growing role in the digital ecosystem.

Dr. Allan Sim Hua Heng, Acting Principal of Riam Hill International Secondary School, praised the session, saying, “We are extremely grateful to Dr. Belayet for delivering such an eye-opening talk. Sessions like these will shape our students into responsible digital citizens.”

This session marks a significant addition to Riam Hill International Secondary School’s digital education initiative, reinforcing its mission to provide students with a holistic education that prepares them for real-world challenges.
