Sarawak to spotlight drone innovation at Low Altitude Economy Seminar in Miri
Posted date:Miri, Sarawak – 15 March 2026 – Sarawak is set to strengthen its position in emerging aviation technologies with the Low Altitude Economy (LAE) Seminar 2026, bringing together industry leaders, policymakers, researchers, and innovators to explore the rapidly expanding role of drone technology in Malaysia’s future economy.
Organised by the Ministry of Transport Sarawak, the seminar will be held on 31 March 2026 at the Imperial Hotel in conjunction with the Sarawak Aviation Safety Programme 2026.
The event is jointly organised with the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) and Curtin University Malaysia, reflecting a growing collaboration between government, industry, and academia to support safe and innovative drone adoption.
Guest of honour Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, Sarawak’s Minister for Transport, will officiate the seminar, which is expected to attract around 400 participants from across Malaysia.
Participants will include representatives from government agencies, technology companies, aviation regulators, research institutions, and educational organisations such as Curtin University Malaysia, Institut Latihan Perindustrian Miri, Institut Kemahiran Belia Negara Miri, and Kolej Vokasional Miri, alongside members of the public.
The seminar aims to raise awareness of the Low Altitude Economy, a rapidly growing sector driven by drone technology, autonomous systems, and aerial data solutions. Discussions will focus on the latest advancements in drone applications, aviation safety protocols, and regulatory frameworks needed to support the safe expansion of the industry.
The programme will feature a distinguished lineup of keynote speakers, including Dato’ Captain Norazman Mahmud, Chief Executive Officer of CAAM; Lim Guan Ming, General Manager and Accountable Manager of Drone Academy Asia; Meor Badli Shah Ahmad Rafie from SD Guthrie Research Sdn Bhd; Trevor Cui, Solution Engineer at DJI Enterprise; Dr Andi Rossi, Head of Innovation Ecosystem at Futurise Sdn Bhd; and Ir. Dr Lim Eu Shawn, Chief Business and Solutions Officer of Aerodyne Group.
A highlight of the seminar will be a forum titled ‘The Future of Low Altitude Economy in Malaysia,’ moderated by Foad Motalebi from Curtin University Malaysia. The panel discussion will bring together industry experts including Trevor Cui, Shafinaz Salim, Meor Badli Shah Ahmad Rafie, and Ir. Dr Lim Eu Shawn to discuss the transformative potential of drones across sectors such as agriculture, infrastructure inspection, logistics, and disaster response.
In addition to the seminar sessions, participants will have the opportunity to explore an exhibition featuring nine organisations showcasing the latest drone technologies and solutions. Exhibitors include CAAM, Curtin Malaysia Drone Club, Aonic Malaysia, Droneskaki, Tekgra Sdn Bhd, Fly Zone Enterprise, and Aerodyne Group.
While participation in the seminar is primarily by invitation, 50 complimentary seats have been allocated to members of the public who are interested in learning more about drone technology and the emerging low-altitude economy.
