Shell engineer inspires Curtin Malaysia students to design purpose-driven careers
Posted date:Miri, Sarawak – 18 July 2025 – Over 160 Chemistry Foundation students from the School of Pre-U and Continuing Education (SPACE) at Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) recently gained fresh clarity on their academic and career goals during an inspiring talk by Sarawak Shell Berhad professional and industry speaker Claudius Weson.
He started with a disclaimer, and clarifying that his word does not reflecting the organisation that he is currently working with.
The two-hour session titled ‘Designing Your Career: How to Find Purpose Early’ challenged the students to reflect deeply on their life paths, personal growth, and the value of education beyond the classroom.
Organised by Associate Teaching Fellow Cynthia Paul Sebli, the talk was designed to motivate the students early in their academic journey while reinforcing the relevance of chemistry in shaping future-ready professionals.
Claudius brought a wealth of industry experience and personal insight to the session, sharing candid anecdotes from his own career in the oil and gas sector. Through engaging storytelling, thought-provoking questions, and interactive exercises, he urged students to discover their “why,” develop resilience, and embrace both technical knowledge and soft skills such as communication, adaptability and teamwork.
“Chemistry isn’t just a subject—it’s a stepping stone to shaping your legacy,” said Claudius, encouraging students to align their academic pursuits with a deeper sense of purpose.
A highlight of the session was a mock job interview segment, where five student volunteers – Grace Khoo, Nathan Chua, Ricky Law, Christian Mullock, and Stephen Juna – braved the stage to answer real-world interview questions. The lively exchange drew laughter and applause while offering practical insights into what employers seek beyond grades.
Student feedback was overwhelmingly positive. “This talk reminded me that life is short and purposeful living starts with setting clear goals,” said Grace Khoo.
“It is not just about getting good grades,” added Nathan Chua. “Soft skills like confidence and communication are what set you apart in the real world.”
The session concluded with a token of appreciation presented to Claudius by Hii Kiew Ling, Head of the Department of Science and Technology, on behalf of Associate Professor Fidella Tiew, Dean of SPACE.
Reflecting on the event’s success, Cynthia Paul Sebli said, “This career talk was a transformative experience for our students. They walked away not just motivated, but empowered to take charge of their education and future.”
Curtin Malaysia continues to deliver impactful learning experiences that go beyond academic achievement, helping students build a strong foundation for both personal and professional success.
