STEM Trailblazers and National Robotics Competition set to electrify Miri at Curtin Malaysia

Miri, Sarawak – 4 July 2025 – Miri is set to make history this July as it becomes the epicentre of science, innovation and youth empowerment in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education. For the very first time, the main event of annual STEM Trailblazers 2025 and the National Robotics Competition (NRC) 2025 – Sarawak State Level will be held in Miri, hosted at Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia).

Taking place from 18 to 19 July 2025, this exciting two-day event promises a dynamic celebration of creativity, discovery and future-ready talent. Organised by Sarawak’s Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Sarawak (MEITD) in partnership with leading academic institutions, STEM Trailblazers 2025 aims to inspire thousands of students, educators, and technology enthusiasts with its vibrant mix of exhibitions, competitions, and hands-on learning experiences.

While the event will also be held concurrently in Kuching, the Miri edition at Curtin Malaysia will be the centre of attention, serving as the main venue for the state’s biggest STEM showcase. The event is co-hosted by Curtin Malaysia, i-CATS University College, University of Technology Sarawak (UTS), and Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus, with strong support from the Ministry of Education Malaysia, the Sarawak State Education Department, and Sasbadi Learning Solutions Sdn. Bhd.

Visitors to Curtin Malaysia can look forward to an immersive experience featuring interactive exhibitions, live demonstrations, technology showcases and hands-on STEM activities suitable for all ages. Faculty and student innovators from Curtin Malaysia will be joined by a wide range of external exhibitors, including Realfun Academy, Planetarium Sultan Iskandar, All Aboard Young Leaders Centre – Chumbaka Miri, Sarawak Metro, Pustaka Negeri Sarawak, Miri City Council, Jong Integrated Traditional Chinese Medicine & Acupuncture Centre (Miri Branch), and SMD Semiconductor, and Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation Bhd (SDEC). Together, they will bring science and technology to life through engaging exhibits and real-world applications.

One of the major highlights is the National Robotics Competition (NRC) 2025, which will also be held in Miri for the first time. Open to students aged 7 to 19, the competition challenges participants to design, build, and program robots using LEGO Education technology to solve real-world challenges.

More than just a contest, the NRC is designed to nurture students’ interest in STEM, develop higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills, and encourage innovation, creativity, and teamwork. Winners of the state-level competition will advance to the national level, with the chance to represent Malaysia at the prestigious World Robot Olympiad (WRO) international finals.

The robotics competition at Curtin Malaysia will be conducted over two days. On 18 July, participants will compete in the RoboMission Rookie, RoboMission Pro, and STEM Invention & Innovation categories, which are open to both primary and secondary school students. On 19 July, the action continues with RoboMission Junior (Primary School), Future Innovators, and RoboSports categories for both primary and secondary school participants.

Adding even more excitement to the event, students can take part in eleven themed STEM workshops designed to ignite their imagination and deepen their interest in areas such as sustainability, robotics, agriculture, coding, finance, and data analysis.

These engaging workshops include “Energy Architects Showdown: Forging the Art and Alchemy of Sustainability,” “MechaQuest: Build & Battle!,” “Home Aquaponics System Build: Feed Yourselves Food and Veggies,” “Drone Workshop with Challenge,” and “STEM Quest with Capybara: Build a Bridge, Purify Water, Win the Challenge!” Others include the “Solar Power Tank Challenge,” “From Bottle to Bloom: Perfecting Water for Thriving Tomato Crop,” “When Nature and Humans Collide: Disaster Survival 101,” “Flutter Blast: Create Your First Game in a Snap!,” “Trade Smart: Mini Workshop & Live Demo,” and “Data Tells a Story: Turn Numbers into Power!”
