Successful conclusion of Curtin Malaysia English Enhancement Programme empowering Sarawakian students for tertiary education

8 May 2024 – Miri, Sarawak – Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia), in partnership with Yayasan Sarawak, marked the successful culmination of the latest English Enhancement Programme (EEP) at the university with a closing ceremony attended by the latest cohort of 150 students. This year will mark a significant milestone with the largest cohorts totalling 300 students benefiting from the intensive programme.

The EEP, free of charge to Sarawakian students, is a collaborative effort between Curtin Malaysia and Yayasan Sarawak designed to equip school leavers with proficient English language skills necessary for tertiary education. The programme, fully funded by Yayasan Sarawak, ensures that financial constraints do not hinder access to quality education. Moreover, students receive a one-time stipend of RM300 to cover their living expenses during the programme.

One of the programme’s standout features is the provision of free accommodation at the Curtin Malaysia campus for outstation students throughout the four-week course. This initiative not only promotes inclusivity but also fosters a conducive learning environment, enabling students to fully immerse themselves in the learning experience. Furthermore, those who successfully complete the EEP are entitled to credits towards selected units should they join courses at Curtin Malaysia later.

“Empowering youth with the essential language skills needed for success in tertiary education has always been a priority for us,” remarked Professor Tang Fu Ee, Dean of Learning and Teaching of Curtin Malaysia, who represented Pro Vice-Chancellor, President and Chief Executive Professor Simon Leunig at the closing ceremony.

“We are proud to deliver this programme exclusively for Sarawakian students, and are immensely proud of the dedication and progress they have demonstrated throughout the programme,” he added.

Representing the management of Yayasan Sarawak was Assistant Director Liew Zhe Rong, who emphasised the foundation’s commitment to providing equal opportunities for all Sarawakians. “Investing in education is investing in the future of Sarawak. The EEP is a testament to our dedication to empowering our youth and ensuring they have the tools needed to excel in higher education and beyond.”

The success of the EEP underscores the collaborative efforts between Curtin Malaysia and Yayasan Sarawak in advancing education and empowering the youth of Sarawak. As the programme continues to grow and evolve, it remains steadfast in its mission to bridge the gap and pave the way for a brighter future for Sarawakian students.

As one of five higher education institutions owned by the Sarawak Government through Yayasan Sarawak, Curtin Malaysia offers multiple pathways for Sarawakian students to acquire the quality Australian education Curtin is renowned for. Furthermore, financial assistance such as Yayasan Sarawak’s BP40 Bursary Scheme and its scholarships and student loans are readily available for eligible Sarawakian students to pursue studies at Curtin Malaysia.

This latest cohort, which started on 2 April 2024 with 150 students, was the largest so far, and another cohort of 150 students in May will bring the total for 2024 to 300. This is a significant increase compared to the first cohort of 77 students in July 2023, which is a testimony of the programme’s popularity and demand among Sarawakian students keen to pursue tertiary studies, remarked Professor Tang.

Also present at the closing ceremony were Curtin Malaysia’s Director of Future Students and External Engagement Debora Caroline, community leaders, and representatives from local schools and government agencies.

During the event, Liew gave a briefing on the role of Yayasan Sarawak in the advancement of education in Sarawak and the types of scholarships and financial aid it provides. He, along with Professor Tang, also presented certificates to outstanding students in the programme. Leadership and resilience were particularly celebrated, with students Alphonsus Anyie Wan, Lusinah Aren Peter, and Richard Wong Ming Hao recognised for their exemplary performance and perseverance throughout the programme.

The next cohort of the EEP beginning on 6 May 2024 will see 150 students from locations across Sarawak, including Miri, Bintulu, Lawas, Limbang, Sibu and Kuching, being part of the campus community at Curtin Malaysia and acquiring the all-important English language skills from the university’s English lecturers and tutors.
