The Great Escape a great success for Curtin Sarawak Social Ambassadors

Miri, 14 May 2015 – ‘The Great Escape’, a recent 3-day camp held at Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) for secondary school students in Miri, proved to be an outstanding success with the participation of 124 students from seven schools.

The schools were SMK Chung Hua, SMK St. Columba, SMK St. Joseph, SMK Pujut, SMK Lopeng Tengah, SM Pei Min and SMK Taman Tunku.

The camp, hosted by the Curtin Sarawak Social Ambassadors (CSSA), was organised in line with the CSSA’s vision of shaping young leaders for the future through the development of critical soft skills. It was also aimed at exposing the students to learning outside the classroom and giving them a taste of the vibrant campus life at Curtin Sarawak.

Through various fun, interactive and educational activities, the students were encouraged to develop their teamwork, leadership and critical thinking skills. Among the activities were ‘The Big Game’ which required them to complete tasks across the university campus; ‘The Life Game’ which mimicked real life situations; ‘The Mini Concert’ involving dance sessions; and ‘The Century Crisis’, a murder mystery game.

In expressing his joy in the camp’s success, organising chairperson Daniel Tie Yin Siong said, “We were able to turn a group of complete strangers into one cohesive family or team, able to work together and achieve common goals. Throughout the camp, we uncovered a lot of hidden talent and leadership potential in the participants.”
According to vice organising chairperson Wallace Ling Jin Wei, the concept behind the camp was to encourage the students to escape from their comfort zones and unlock their full potential. He said it helped them learn them learn the true meaning of teamwork and unity.

CSSA founder and originator of ‘The Great Escape’ camp, Chai Chung Yu, added that the camp was also conceived to connect young people through fun, challenging, inspirational and educational activities, and it has certainly made a positive impact on the participants.

The camp organisers were supported by staff of Curtin Sarawak’s Marketing Department and the university’s student council. Other supporters include Sajian Warisan, Fratini’s Restaurant, Zaika Authentic North India Cuisine, STAGE Family KTV, Maze Escape Room, CT Academic Services, Bravo Cafe & Long Kee, Piato Bistro and Brightstar Machinery Services.

CSSA is a club administered wholly by students of Curtin Sarawak. It provides a platform for students of the university and secondary schools to develop vital skills not commonly taught in classrooms. It also challenges young leaders to take the lead in organising events and thus hone their leadership skills.
