114 Curtin Students and Staff Receive Prizes & Scholarships Award

MIRI, Friday, 8 June 2007 – Over a hundred Curtin students, graduates, proud parents & friends gathered in Curtin University of Technology Sarawak campus for the Prizes & Scholarship Award Ceremony 2007. The memorable event was officiated by Yang Berhormat Dr Lee Kim Shin, Assistant Minister of Infrastructure and Communication, Sarawak and Chairman, Management Board, Curtin Sarawak Malaysia.

“I am proud to be here today to attend yet another prestigious event to congratulate the current students and graduates of Curtin Sarawak in their excellent academic performance with the University,” exclaimed YB Dr Lee Kim Shin during speech.

10 recipients were given the Samling Award for the Best Graduate in different disciplines such as Samling Best Business Information System Graduate, Samling Best Mass Communication Graduate Award, Samling Best Mechanical Engineering Graduate Award and many more. Each recipients will receive a cheque of RM1,000 and a certificate from Samling Group of Companies.

5 current students received Shell Awards ranging from Shell Best Engineering Student Award, Shell Best Engineering Contributor Award, Shell Best Third Year Engineering Student Award, Shell Best Second Year Engineering Student Award and Shell Best First Year Engineering Student Award. Each recipient received vouchers valued RM 1,000 to RM2,000.

Ernst & Young awarded 3 recipients with a cheque of RM 1,000 and a certificate for the Best Performing Students for each year of study.

Shin Yang Group awarded Gary Chong Vui Leong a cheque of RM1,000 for the Best Graduate for Civil & Construction Engineering.

The Chartetered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) awarded Teo Siaw Tze for the Top Scorer in Accounting (Mnagerial Control) with a cheque of RM300.

Ng Siang Jin received a Book Prize Award of RM300 and a certificate from CPA (Certified Practising Accountants for achieving the Top Scorer in Accounting (Financial) 250 unit.

Tan Ai Hui received cash RM2,000 from Zecon Engineering Berhad for the Best Civil & Construction Project Award.

Other companies such as The Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM), Murphy Oil Corporation and The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) also contributed to the best students in different categories.

Besides the special prizes given out, 33 students were given a letter of acknowledgement for being in the Vice Chancellor List for their outstanding performance in Semester 1 & Semester 2, 2006.

WA Premier Scholarship, Pat Addison Award and Curtin Sarawak PhD and Master by Research Degree recipients were also present for this distinguished ceremony.

Students and graduates of Curtin were not the only recipients present to receive their awards and prizes. 44 Curtin staff are also present to receive awards for study support from the University.

“It is important that we encourage and support the staff of Curtin Sarawak to further their studies because it will not just improve their knowledge and skills, it will also enhance the learning experience for the students studying here,” commented Professor John Evans, Pro Vice Chancellor of Curtin Sarawak.

“Curtin Sarawak will always acknowledge those who excel in their studies and hope that with this recognition, it will motivate others to follow the foot steps of the recipients tonight,” he added further. Curtin Sarawak also recently gave out RM 798,655 worth of scholarships to 57 students who excelled in their SPM exams.

“I am really happy that Curtin University offered me this scholarship because I needed the financial aid to achieve my goals in life. This scholarship has motivated me to strive harder and has boosted my confidence in my studies,” exclaimed Liew Lee Moi, a Scholarship recipient for Foundation Commerce.

“We are hoping to award more scholarships in Semester 2 to encourage more students to further their higher education and be trained as the leaders of the next generation,” Professor John Evans added.
