Curtin lecturers raise funds and organise workshop on self-sustainable vegetable planting for Miri Methodist Children’s Home

Miri – 5 July 2023 – Three lecturers of the Faculty of Business at Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) recently raised funds and organised a workshop on self-sustainable vegetable planting for the children of the Miri Methodist Children’s Home.

The lecturers, Wendy Law, Dr. Lynn Ling Yew Hua and Dr. Jong Ling, organised a fundraising campaign that raised RM5,400 in cash for the home, and conducted the workshop for the children aged 7 to 18 years with the help of Curtin Malaysia alumnus Kho Lian Buan, who runs a business selling plants.

The workshop was well received by the children, providing them with the essential knowledge and hands-on experience to create a self-sustaining vegetable garden at the home located on Jalan Jee Foh 9, Krokop. Dr. Jong Ling stated that the success of the workshop would not have been possible without the collaborative efforts of Kho, who made it a most enjoyable and enriching experience for the children.

Law emphasised the significance of this initiative, stating, “We believe that imparting skills in sustainable agriculture can empower the children, providing them with the practical knowledge to not only start a garden at the home, but also on their own initiative in the future. It is our collective responsibility to support their holistic development.”

She said the fundraising campaign also received an overwhelming response from various donors who came forward to support the worthy cause. The funds will go towards supporting the home’s daily operational expenses.
