300 Young Doctors Visit Curtin Sarawak

MIRI, 13 March 2007 – In line with its community relations programme to foster and further enhance the current existing cordial relationship with the community, Curtin University of Technology Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) played host to 300 young doctors who attended the annual state wide Young Doctors’ Convention 2007 which began on 13 March 2007.

One of the highlight for the young doctors aged between 10 – 12 years old was to visit the first foreign university on Sarawak, Curtin Sarawak.

“I am thrilled to see so many young and motivated students who aspire to grow up to be doctors. Having an ambition is the first step for anyone to the road of success,” said Professor John Evans, Pro Vice-Chancellor of Curtin Sarawak. “I hope that this visit to our campus will open your eyes and mind so you are able to explore different fields in the future.” He added further.

“I believe that everyone can be a doctor or a specialist of a certain trade as long as they believe in their dream and they have the passion for it,” Dr. Joan Gribble, Director of Teaching and Learning of Curtin Sarawak shared in her inspirational talk with the young visitors.

During the visit, different activities were conducted by the lecturers from the different faculty. The Engineering lecturers were giving demonstration of the “Home–made Seismograph” to show the visitors how earthquakes are measured with the Richter scale and “Hurricane in a bottle!” where the visitors were shown how hurricane started. The visitors were also escorted into the biology laboratory where they were given the opportunity to use the stethoscope like real doctors!

A short film was also screened for all the young visitors to get a glimpse of the production of the Mass Communication students.

Curtin Sarawak was happy to be the host of the visit for the young doctors and look forward to open its door to more visitors in the near future.
