Congratulations…. Curtin Sarawak MSC Status Renewed

MIRI, 3 July 2006 – Curtin University of Technology Sarawak (Curtin Sarawak) was granted the Multimedia super corridor (MSC) flagship for another five years. The MSC flagship to Curtin Sarawak was followed by a visit by Dr Yew Kok Meng, Senior Manager, Multimedia Development Corporation Sdn Bhd and his team from MSC to Curtin Sarawak.

The MSC award will further continue to assist Curtin Sarawak in the promotion of ICT education not only in Sarawak but also in Malaysia. MSC has been spearheading the promotion of ICT in Malaysia through encouraging startup companies, Small &  Medium  Enterprise  (SME) as well as institutes of higher learning such as Curtin.  One of the main objectives of MSC is to prepare ICT students for the industry and help them become industry ready and join the work force.   This objective is in line with the PM to objective to create a knowledge base society.

The MSC delegation were welcomed by Professor Dr John Evans, Pro Vice-Chancellor & Chief Executive together with Professor Dr Ruth Marquies, Dean, Curtin Sarawak. During the visit Dr Yew shared with Curtin Sarawak staff and students the various incentive schemes offered to ICT students and academics in order to attract more students to study ICT.

Dr Yew and his team from MSC were impressed with the various ICT courses and Lab facilities at Curtin Sarawak, particularly the Bachelor of Technology and Networking course.

Dr Chua Han Bing, Director, School of Engineering & Science said, “The Bachelor of Technology (BTech) course was introduced at Curtin Sarawak in 2003.  It is a three year course  and  offers a wide spectrum of ICT topics with specialized hands-on experience on the state of the art equipment in networking, management and security.  The course has been attracting wide range of students over the past few years.  In 2006, the first group of graduates from BTech course were immediately able to find jobs around Malaysia.”

Curtin Sarawak’s next intake will be in February and July 2006 and recruitment sessions are currently ongoing throughout the region.  Educational counseling session is available from 8.30 am until 5.00 pm (Monday to Friday) and 9.00 am to 1.00 pm (Saturday).

Curtin Sarawak was established in February 1999 in partnership with the Sarawak Government, it is the first offshore campus of Curtin University of Technology, Western Australia and also the first foreign university campus to be set up in East Malaysia. In November 1999, Curtin Sarawak was awarded the Multimedia Super Corridor status.
