Posted date:Miri – 28 March 2011 – The Accounting Club of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) successfully organised a career talk with The Malaysian Institute of Certified Public Accountant (MICPA) at its campus recently.
The talk, which also included an information sharing session, was attended by accounting students from the university’s School of Business. MICPA was represented by its Executive Director, Foo Yoke Pin, and Education and Training Manager, Victor Liew.
Also present were Curtin Sarawak’s Pro Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ian Kerr; Lecturer of Accounting and Business Information Systems, Chan Kwok Mow; and advisor of The Accounting Club, Ling Yew Hua.
In his talk to the students, Foo outlined the admission requirements, streams of training, practical experience, examination structure, framework of assessment, entry qualification exemption, study leave, fee scales and pathways relating to MICPA and Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia (ICAA) membership. He also briefed them on recognition of the CPA Malaysia qualification.
Curtin Sarawak students graduating from the university’s Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) programme are exempted from completing Module A and Module B of MICPA’s Professional Stage Examination. They need only pass the technical and final modules, and subsequently obtain 3 years of practical experience under the supervision of a member of the institute, to qualify as Certified Public Accountants of Malaysia and be members of MICPA.
As a result of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed in February 2009 between the ICAA and MICPA, Curtin Sarawak’s accounting graduates will also qualify as Chartered Accountants of Australia on completion of the MICPA programme.
MICPA is the premier professional accountancy body in Malaysia with over 3000 members and 800 students. Its education curriculum covers international standards and business finance and strategies which equip its members with the knowledge and understanding of the international nature of business in this new era.
It is also well-recognised for its role in research and the development of accounting and auditing standards in Malaysia together with other Malaysian regulatory and statutory bodies.
