Curtin IEEE IAS members visit automation and 3D printing companies as part of their engineering studies

Miri – 19 April 2023 – 28 student members of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Industry Applications Society (IEEE IAS) Student Chapter of Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) recently spent three days visiting the Siemens Authorised Training Centre in Kuala Lumpur, 3DGens Sdn. Bhd. in Shah Alam and Statron Asia Pacific in Petaling Jaya to learn more about the application of electrical and electronic systems in industry.

They were accompanied by student chapter advisor Prof. Garenth Lim King Hann and programme coordinator for software engineering Dr. Saaveethya Sivakumar, who are also lecturers in Curtin Malaysia’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Such industry visits are an integral part of student learning at Curtin Malaysia and embedded in all Curtin engineering programmes. They also align with the IEEE IAS’ mission to be a world leader in the advancement of science and technology and linking theory and practice in the application of electrical and electronic systems for the benefit of humanity.

At the Siemens Authorised Training Centre (SATC), which is part of a network of authorised training centres around the world providing comprehensive training on Siemens products and solutions, the students learned how Siemens, a multinational engineering and technology company, delivers training courses and certifications to individuals and organisations interested in gaining knowledge and skills in various Siemens technologies.

They also learned how Siemens Malaysia supplies comprehensive products and solutions for various sectors of the Malaysian economy, particularly in the areas of intelligent infrastructure for buildings and distributed energy systems, automation and digitalisation in the process and manufacturing industries, smart mobility solutions for rail and road transport, as well as medical technology and digital healthcare services.

At 3D Gens Sdn. Bhd., a leading provider of 3D printing services and solutions, the students learned about the company’s range of services, including 3D printing, 3D scanning, and 3D design, catering to the needs of various industries such as the automotive, aerospace, medical, and education industries. They also met some of the company’s experts who are well-versed in the latest 3D printing technologies and provide customised solutions to meet the specific requirements of clients.

Similarly, at Statron Asia Pacific, a company that specialises in the design, manufacturing, and distribution of high-quality power protection and energy management solutions, the students learned about Statron’s product range, which includes uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems, voltage stabilisers, surge protectors, and power distribution units (PDUs). The company caters to a wide range of industries such as telecommunications, data centres, medical facilities, and government agencies.

Fourth-year electrical and electronics engineering student and IEEE Curtin Malaysia Student Branch president Alan Tiong Ka Wei said the entire experience was very enlightening and all the students gained valuable knowledge and insights through their interaction with the industry experts.

“It highlighted the importance of collaboration, innovation and continuous learning in driving progress and growth in the industrial sector. We were reminded of the significance of working together, staying innovative, and continuously upgrading our skills and knowledge,” said Tiong.

Prof. Lim, meanwhile, said, “Learning at Curtin Malaysia is not confined to the classroom. Industry visits are an integral part of our engineering curricula, enriching the student experience and ensuring students get the practical knowledge and experience they need for a better understanding of their course subjects, industry practices and challenges, as well as career prospects in the industries.”

Curtin Malaysia offers Curtin’s four-year Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (BEng Hons) which is double-accredited by Engineers Australia and the Board of Engineers Malaysia. Taught by highly-experienced teaching staff, many with extensive industrial experience, the course provides students with fundamental and advanced knowledge relevant to industry with theory, computer simulation and practical components.
