Curtin Malaysia collaborating with ESG Malaysia on ESG initiatives
Posted date:Miri – 23 May 2023 – Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ESG Malaysia for collaboration in Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) initiatives.
Signing for ESG Malaysia was its president, Steven Lee Kok Keong, while acting chief operating officer Associate Professor Ir. Pieter Willem Pottas signed for Curtin Malaysia.
Also present at the signing at the university were ESG Malaysia Secretary Oh Ying Ying, and Council members Ts. Bryan Paul and Ir. Augusta Lee Chee Sing; and Curtin Malaysia’s Dean of Faculty of Engineering and Science Professor Tuong-Thuy Vu, Director of School of Pre-U and Continuing Education Associate Professor Fidella Tiew, and Coordinator of the Curtin Malaysia ESG Hub Dr. Yong Leong Kong.
As leading organisations representing the educational sector and ESG industry respectively, the partnership will greatly benefit both Curtin Malaysia and ESG Malaysia in terms of sharing knowledge and expertise in ESG practices, joint research, capacity building, promoting sustainable development and driving positive changes in society.
Speaking on behalf of Curtin Malaysia’s Pro Vice-Chancellor, President and Chief Executive Professor Simon Leunig, Associate Professor Ir. Pottas said the MoU marked a significant milestone for both Curtin Malaysia and ESG Malaysia in their shared journey towards a sustainable future.
“We are pleased to collaborate with ESG Malaysia in initiatives related to environmental, social, and governance practices, as we believe in the importance of creating a positive impact on our planet,” he said.
“Through this collaboration, we aim to drive sustainable practices that lead to long-term value for all stakeholders, including the government and non-governmental organisations we associate with, our members and students, staff, communities, and others. We are aware of the pressing challenges faced by our planet, and we recognise that our actions have a significant impact on the environment.”
Steven Lee, meanwhile, remarked that the MoU was a testimony of the two organisations’ commitment to developing ESG practices and an ESG industry in Sarawak, which is essential for the successful implementation of sustainable development in the state.
“Curtin Malaysia has demonstrated a strong commitment to sustainability and innovation. The university has been at the forefront of research, education and ESG practices. We are delighted to collaborate with them,” said Lee.
“Through this partnership, ESG Malaysia and Curtin Malaysia will work together to develop and implement ESG practices in Sarawak, bringing together experts from academia, industry and government to achieve our common goal of promoting sustainable development in Sarawak. Working together, we can create a model for other states and industries to follow.”
