Curtin Malaysia empowers 225 student leaders at SMK Luar Bandar Miri Leadership Camp

Miri, Sarawak – 11 May 2026 – More than 200 student leaders from SMK Luar Bandar Miri gained hands-on leadership experience during a two-day camp, powered by Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) and industry partners.

A total of 225 prefects and class representatives took part in the Leadership Camp, designed to strengthen confidence, teamwork, and communication skills among emerging young leaders. The initiative, organised by SMK Luar Bandar Miri, was supported by Curtin Malaysia and the Young Engineers Section of the Institution of Engineers Malaysia, Miri Branch (IEM-YES Miri).

A key highlight of the camp was an interactive team-building session led by Dr. Yong Leong Kong, lecturer from Curtin Malaysia’s Faculty of Engineering and Science and vice chairman of IEM-YES Miri. He was joined by student leaders from Curtin Malaysia’s IEM Student Section, whose energy and relatability helped create an engaging and impactful learning environment.

The Curtin student volunteers played a pivotal role in guiding the camp participants through challenges and activities, serving as role models while demonstrating essential leadership qualities such as collaboration, problem-solving, and effective communication. Their involvement underscored Curtin Malaysia’s emphasis on student-led engagement and real-world leadership development.

Chan Chi Hong, Chairman of the IEM Student Section and a third-year Electrical and Electronic Engineering student, said the experience was equally meaningful for the facilitators. “The camp allowed us to apply our leadership skills, inspire younger students, and grow together. It was truly rewarding to see their confidence build,” he said.

Dr. Yong highlighted the importance of nurturing leadership from a young age, stating, “True leadership is cultivated through collaboration, resilience, and empathy. This camp provides a platform for young leaders to discover their strengths, build meaningful connections, and prepare to lead with confidence in their schools and communities,” he said.

Throughout the programme, the students participated in interactive workshops, group challenges, and reflection sessions aimed at building self-awareness and teamwork. Feedback from participants pointed to increased confidence and a stronger sense of responsibility as leaders within their school community.

The initiative reflects the shared commitment of Curtin Malaysia and IEM-YES Miri to developing future-ready leaders and fostering a culture of teamwork, responsibility, and community engagement among youth.

It also highlights Curtin Malaysia’s broader mission to deliver impactful, community-focused experiences that complement academic learning. By combining practical leadership training with strong scientific knowledge and industry relevance, the university continues to prepare its students to excel professionally and contribute meaningfully to society.
