Curtin Malaysia engineering students gain first-hand industry exposure at OISB

Miri, Sarawak – 16 May 2026 – Twenty-eight Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) students from Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) recently gained valuable real-world engineering experience during an industrial visit to Offshore Industries Sdn Bhd (OISB), strengthening industry-academia collaboration and exposing students to the latest practices in power distribution and switchboard engineering.

The visit involved Year 2 to Year 4 students from Curtin Malaysia’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and formed part of the university’s ongoing efforts to equip future engineers with industry-relevant knowledge and practical skills.

Hosted by OISB’s engineering and technical team, the programme began with a comprehensive Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) briefing, followed by an introduction to the company’s operations, ISO certifications, and commitment to engineering excellence and quality assurance.

The students were given exclusive insights into the design and production of OISB’s flagship switchboard systems, including Rawak CENTEC and Rawak DB. Through technical sharing sessions, they explored the full lifecycle of switchboard projects, from tendering and design to manufacturing, assembly, testing, and final delivery.

A key highlight of the visit was the hands-on learning experience, where the students examined Single Line Diagrams (SLDs), interacted with electrical panels, and observed live testing procedures on completed switchboards. The factory tour also allowed the students to witness quality control and verification processes critical to ensuring the safety and reliability of electrical systems.

Third-year student Darren Chew described the experience as highly impactful.

“This industrial visit gave us a clearer understanding of how electrical switchboards are designed, assembled, and tested in real industrial environments. The live demonstrations and factory exposure were extremely valuable for our learning,” he said.

According to lecturers Dr. Siaw Teck Ung and Dr. Wong Kiing Ing, such industry engagement initiatives play an important role in bridging classroom learning with professional engineering practice.

They noted that exposure to real engineering workflows and industrial standards helps students better understand the responsibilities engineers carry in ensuring safety, reliability, and operational excellence in modern electrical systems.

The visit reflects Curtin Malaysia’s commitment to producing industry-ready graduates through strong partnerships with leading companies in the energy and technology sectors.
