Curtin Malaysia foundation and diploma students introduced to financial literacy

Miri – 21 April 2023 – As part of a collaborative effort between two units in its School of Pre-U and Continuing Education (SPACE), foundation and diploma students of Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) were recently introduced to financial literacy through a talk by guest speaker Dex Yong from Prudential Assurance.

The talk was designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills they need to manage their personal finances and make informed decisions about money. Having a guest speaker from industry with vast knowledge and experience in finance was also an invaluable opportunity for the students to gain real-world insights into the Malaysian financial industry.

In his talk, Yong gave the students real-world examples of how financial literacy can impact their lives. He covered a range of topics, including budgeting, saving, investing, and understanding credit.

The students also learned about financial products such as bank accounts, credit cards, and loans, and how to use them responsibly.

According to SPACE’s lecturer for business mathematics, Michelle Phua, financial literacy is an essential skill for students to learn as they prepare for university and beyond. She said that many students may not have had much exposure to financial concepts and may not understand the consequences of poor financial decisions.

She said the talk was very well received by the participating students with many saying that they felt more confident about managing their personal finances.

“As financial literacy becomes an increasingly important issue in our society, guest talks like this can help to ensure that our students are well-equipped to make informed decisions about money,” said Phua.

SPACE was established in 2021 with the aim of creating educational and training opportunities for youth so that they can unlock their potential. The school offers diploma and foundation programmes that are pathways to degree programmes at Curtin Malaysia and other Curtin campuses, as well as professional education, including corporate training, short courses, and micro-credentials, for young learners and working adults to take their careers to the next level.
