Curtin Malaysia hosts inaugural Networking Competition to showcase commitment to teaching innovation and excellence

Miri – 17 October 2023 Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) recently hosted its inaugural Networking Competition aimed at highlighting the university’s dedication to teaching innovation and excellence.

The competition was organised by the Computing Nation Club, Curtin Malaysia’s student-run academic club for students interested in computing, with support from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at its Faculty of Engineering and Science.

The event provided a platform for students from various disciplines, including computer systems and networking, cyber security, electrical engineering, software engineering, and business, to gain valuable insights into the world of computer networking.

The Networking Competition also served as an opportunity to introduce the students to Curtin’s Bachelor of Technology in Computer Systems and Networking course at Curtin Malaysia. Through their participation, the students were able to experience firsthand what the course entails and how it can prepare them for exciting careers in the information technology (IT) industry.

The competition centred around the use of CISCO Packet Tracer, a versatile simulation tool that allows students and professionals to design, configure, and troubleshoot networks, and featured a series of challenging tasks and scenarios, designed to test the students’ knowledge, skills, and problem-solving abilities.

However, this event went beyond being a mere competition; it also served as a workshop on computer systems and networking. Like in a workshop, participants were provided with guidelines and explanations to deepen their understanding of networking principles as they engaged in the competition.

Dr. Han Yi Chiew, coordinator of the Bachelor of Technology in Computer Systems and Networking programme, expressed his enthusiasm for the event, stating, “We were thrilled to see the collaboration between the Computing Nation Club and our lecturers in organising our first networking competition.”

Dr. Han said such initiatives not only introduce students from various disciplines to the world of computer networking but also enrich their cross-disciplinary knowledge and learning experience at Curtin Malaysia. Furthermore, those enrolling in the Bachelor of Technology in Computer Systems and Networking get to work with CISCO networking equipment in the Faculty of Engineering and Science’s state-of-the-art networking laboratory, as well as gain CISCO Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certifications, which are essential in the ever-evolving field of IT and computer networking.

Meanwhile, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Professor Tuong-Thuy Vu, said the Networking Competition showcased Curtin Malaysia’s commitment to fostering excellence and innovation in education. “By providing an interactive and competitive platform for students to showcase their skills, we aim to inspire the next generation of IT professionals and equip them with the necessary knowledge and expertise for successful careers in the field,” he said.

Curtin Malaysia’s dedication to teaching excellence and industry relevance is reflected in its comprehensive range of courses, including the Bachelor of Technology in Computer Systems and Networking. This three-year course, which is available at Curtin’s Perth and Malaysia campuses, continuously evolves to keep pace with industry advancements, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared to meet the demands of the rapidly changing IT landscape.

In addition to offering industry-based skills and experience, the course offers a carefully designed curriculum to students to learn various CISCO components. Curtin Malaysia is the only Cisco-certified provider in East Malaysia, allowing students to obtain Cisco Certified Network Associate and other CISCO qualifications.
