Curtin Malaysia IMechE Student Chapter empowers local students through community outreach programme
Posted date:Miri – 3 August 2023 – The IMechE (Institution of Mechanical Engineers) Student Chapter of Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia), in collaboration with Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Riam at Taman Tunku, recently organised a dynamic community outreach programme aimed at nurturing young minds and fostering a passion for science and engineering.
The day-long event saw a successful engagement between Curtin Malaysia IMechE Student Chapter members and students from SMK Riam. The primary objective of the programme was to introduce the participating students to the captivating world of science and engineering, and motivating them to consider careers in engineering as a viable and exciting path.
It also aimed to promote the inclusive education provided to local students by Curtin Malaysia, and the various pathways they can take to engineering studies at the campus, Curtin University’s largest global campus.
Throughout the day, the participating students were treated to an interactive and hands-on experience. Various demonstrations and interactive sessions were organised by the IMechE Student Chapter volunteers to engage their curiosity and imagination. The activities ranged from simple experiments that showcased scientific principles to more intensive engineering challenges that required creativity and problem-solving skills.
The IMechE Student Chapter volunteers demonstrated exceptional dedication and enthusiasm, effectively conveying their passion for science and engineering. By sharing their own academic journeys and personal experiences, they inspired the young learners and served as excellent role models for their potential future career paths.
“It was truly heartening to witness the enthusiasm of these young students as they explored various aspects of science and engineering,” said Kenneth Lim Zheng Yuan, President of the Curtin Malaysia IMechE Student Chapter. “We believe that early exposure to these fields can be a catalyst for their future ambitions and inspire them to become engineers who contribute to society positively.”
The collaborative effort between Curtin Malaysia and SMK Riam exemplifies the university’s commitment to empowering local communities through educational initiatives. By fostering an interest in science and engineering, this outreach programme seeks to support the development of skilled professionals who can contribute to the nation’s progress.
The Curtin Malaysia IMechE Student Chapter serves as a platform for aspiring engineers to come together, share knowledge, and contribute to the advancement of engineering practices. The chapter is part of a global network of IMechE chapters dedicated to fostering learning and promoting engineering excellence.
