Curtin Malaysia presents Student Learning Awards for academic excellence

Miri – 10 October 2023 – Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) recently presented its inaugural Curtin Malaysia Student Learning Awards to nine of its students to celebrate their outstanding achievements and dedication in their pursuit of excellence in learning.

The students from various programmes and years of study had shown significantly improved performance in their studies, enhancing their academic status from ‘conditional’ to ‘good standing’ over two semesters in 2022 and 2023. All their learning activities, including attendance in classes, assessments, group work and project work, and mentorship from academic staff, were considered for the awards.

The awardees were Zuhairah Imanina (Bachelor of Applied Geology), Darryl Munashe, Hiaw Jia Sing, Johnaton Chan, Pui Yii Shuen and Yap Eng Jui (Bachelor of Engineering in Civil and Construction Engineering, Hons.); Lau Chee Zhen and Ashley Bernadette (Bachelor of Engineering in Chemical Engineering, Hons.), and Aderline Wong (Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting and Finance).

“These exemplary students have demonstrated a firm commitment to turn their studies around. Their unwavering focus and dedication have clearly not gone unnoticed. Their countless hours of studying, engagement with classmates and lecturers, and determination to excel have paid off splendidly, resulting in this well-deserved recognition,” said Dean of Learning and Teaching, Professor Tang Fu Ee.

“By demonstrating grit and determination to successfully improve their studies, they are now poised to complete their courses with flying colours,” he added.

Echoing Prof. Tang’s sentiments, Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Vincent Lee remarked that the students had displayed remarkable levels of active participation in various learning activities, and showcased their eagerness to explore new ideas, think critically, and collaborate effectively.

“Their eagerness to participate have undoubtedly contributed to a more enriching academic experience for everyone. Moreover, their passion for learning and dedication to excellence have set a high standard not only for themselves, but also for future cohorts of students who will be inspired by their accomplishments,” he said.

Prof. Lee also acknowledged and recognised the academic staff who mentored and supported the students. They included Dr. Vijay Anand, Dr. Yong Leong Kong, Dr. Lau Shiew Wei, Carrie Ho, Dr. Angnes Tiong, Dr. Lee Yeong Huei, Dr. Tay Ai Chen, and Yip Ka Yii.

“Our academic staff play an instrumental role in nurturing exceptional students. Their mentorship, guidance, and continued support have undoubtedly contributed significantly to our students’ success, and we are proud to have such exceptional individuals as part of our institution,” he said.

Student Pui Yii Shuen said receiving the Curtin Malaysia Student Learning Awards was not only a huge honour and recognition of the students’ diligence and commitment to success, but also the considerable time and effort expended by their lecturers to support the students.

Lecturer Yip Ka Yii said, “As an educator, I believe that apart from supporting students’ academic achievement, it is also crucial that we instil the right learning attitude in students.”

Meanwhile, fellow lecturer Carrie Ho said, “It is important to support and encourage students that may be struggling academically, whether in providing academic mentorship, consultation time, or words of encouragement, to help them return to good academic standing. All students have the potential to excel, but may need a bit of help from time to time.”
